Ok, I'm undecided as to whether I should splash
out £300 for a Winfast GeForce3 TD or just wait
until the X-Box comes out and kick this upgrading
lark in to touch.
I mean, seriously, I have spent over £2500 on my PC
including the cost of building it initially and it's always
1 step behind. Like other posts on this group say, the
GF3 Ultra with furry dice and go faster stripes will be
out in a few months then the GF4, whereas I expect the
X-Box to have a life of at least 3-4 years (look at PS 1).
So, what to do?

The PC route is always better, IMHO, because even though your hardware is
quickly outdated, it still works. The PS1 is a 100Mhz processor, and it has
just about reached its end. A Pentium 100 would do much better with soem
things. As another plus, the computer has a chance at getting faster- driver
updates and system improvements make it faster all the time, while a console
only seems to get slower when companies try to squeeze more into the same
console.

And, (whoops) the X-Box uses a P3/733 proc with a version of the GF3 built
in. It's very fast and will be around for at least two years or until Sony
releases the PS3, which they have allready leaked info on. Your gonna get
screwed :) with any platform u choose these days cos there's big bucks
involved in having the biggest and fastest whatever and it's doubtfull that
any console will be upgradable except for maybe an add-on like a high speed
internet connection or bigger HD. The X-box and PS2 are certainly
formidable pieces but your sorta stuck with them out of the box I agree
with Erik, PC's can be easily upgraded.

You guys are on crack IMHO. Microsoft can't compete in any market that
requires compact and efficient software. I'd forget about the X-box and
wait for the next gen Sega box.

Ah, who's on crack? The next Sega Box?? They announced around 7 months

"X-Box to have a life of at least 3-4 years (look at PS 1)."

Have u looked at the ps1's graphics lately? they look like rotten ass!
You cant upgrade a console period! the equipment will start to age and need
replacement sooner or later, maybe the old console games will work on the
new one maybe not, I know that the pc games I have work on whatever pc I put
them on!
I traded my ps2 for a geforce3 and im glad I did!! I certainly dont have
time to console and play pc games! I love fps games have u tried playing
them on a gamepad instead of a mouse? It sucks! The only thing consoles are
good for is madden!

If you want to stay on the bleeding edge your going to pay! A duron 850 and
a gf2 can certainly play any game out now at a decent resolution without
breaking someones bank acct, if you cant deal with upgrading all the time
then wait longer to upgrade the prices will come down!

played with my Nephews PS2 yesterday. NOT impressed at all!!

Granted, its the best console I've seen to date, but my GF256 at 800 X 600 X
32 looked just as good on a 19" VGA monitor.

BTW: The PS2 was playing on a 13" Hitachi TV. I imagine on my Sony 36" it
would really suck shit!
Motion was quick, but still... Sky textures were nice but nothing special.
lighting effects are poor, ground textures are just ok. Its only strong
point is object rendition for characters and props.

Still, for a unit that is 'cutting edge' I was not so impressed when
comparing it to a GF2 Pro/Ultra or a GF3. My guess is that the resolution is
a major limiting factor as well as NTSC display.

The XBox is said to be not much better than the PS2 and that's with a
modified (watered down?) GF3 GPU?? Again, limited resolution for NTSC, FSAA
that is bound to be blurry and a damn handheld game controller.

No thanks! Maybe for my kids but I'll stick with my PC till I'm maggot food.

Another thing Is I just got final fantasy nine for the PS1. It
probably is about the hard limit of what that system can do, however
its a pretty kick butt game and does look fairly good for such an old
system. Think of it this way, the PS1 was made in 1995 what computer
games have you played lately that would play on a PC made in 1995?

Microsoft won't be making the software and it will be compact and
efficient. Lots of developers microsoft have on board will be making
it. Microsoft just got smart and figured that they can make the
console and sell that and make money off the software with licensing
in the way that sony and nintendo do.

Game consoles are disposeable though. The PC route just got not
better. As I said the PS1 has reached its end about but 5 years plus
is a heck of a long time and there is no one out there with a PC that
old still using it for much (not games anyway)

300 bucks for an xbox is making one hell of a lot more sense to me
than what a geforce 3 or even a geforce 2 ultra would cost.. and those
are not the ONLY pc upgrades I have to get in the next year to still
have a viable system for games.

Go and look at who is on board with xbox and what games are coming for
it and what games will be coming on multi platforms including it. Xbox
is making more sense to me now than keeping this dinosaur alive for
gaming. It will do it better than all but the very best gaming PCs
too, mostly because its a thin machine directly programmed for with a
thin software client instead of these bloated OSes we try to game on.

I was waiting and hoping microsoft eventually came out with a thin
client you could boot to just for games and still have online
capability but the games would run a lot better on these super
computers we have than they do in multi use windows Oses we play them
on now. Well microsoft may have thought of that too, but then they
thought one step further: make it a console and it will do so better,
faster, cheaper while making them lots of money in a whole new
software field (no one can license you the rights to make a game for
the pc, you just can because no one person really owns "pc rights",
but on the new consoles the games have to be licensed by the maker)

I don't think the PS3 will be that big a deal, it will be lot like the
PS2 which is hard to program for I hear and very expensive for not
having a hard drive or an ethernet card. I think xbox will be far more
preferred by at least jaded PC users tired of having to spend 300
bucks or more on a graphics card then having to get a new Proc, and of
course a new MB for the proc, so of course a whole nother new set of
yet ANOTHER freaking new kind of 256 meg of ram since they need it for
the faster proc EVERY FREAKING 2 YEARS AT LEAST. I'm pretty damn tired
of that myself. I mean it wasn't even 2 years ago that I plopped down
a huge ass chunk of money for a p2 400, 440bx mboard with 2 x agp, and
agp 16 meg stb velocity 4400 tnt card 2x agp, and 128 meg pc 100
dimms. Guess what? I HAVE TO UPGRADE ALL OF THAT NOW SOON.

Or I can just wait a bit to see what the xbox is really like and more
info about just what games will be coming for it. I can then network
it to a router with my PC, play it on my PC monitor in one way or
another (if you can't out of the box I have agreat external Alps tv
tuner thing I play playstation games on my monitor with and they look
fantastic) and use my PC for really all they are made to do
consistently well:

Word processing, light graphics work, printing, IRC, using an
internet browser and posting to usenet.
For doing the above I will never have to upgrade my PC again.
I was thinking this same thing even before I'd heard of the xbox, that
soon I should be going consoles for games because its so much cheaper.
The xbox coming along and being so similar in architecture that pc
game makers will develop for it and the fact that it has a hard drive
and ethernet card has solidified it.

I mean heck, why stop there? For LESS than I'd pay really for the
computer upgrade I have to make.. I could get an xbox, a playstation 2
and even the dead dreamcast or maybe the nintendo gamecube and STILL
not pay what I would for one or more pc upgrades that I have to make
ONLY for gaming.. ridiculous. There was a point where the
upgradeability and online play capability of the PC gave it an edge I
still wanted, Xbox is the first console (more like a console/pc hybrid
really) that does the same thing out of the box really.

Heck, for all we know if it works well microsoft may just make an xbox
2 in 3 years or so which can play the old games as well. Even buying a
new reincaration of the xbox every 2-3 years would cost less than
continually upgrading computers for more bloated operating systems and
more demanding games. Knowing Bill Gates, Microsoft and Nvidia that
might be their exact plan. If some people like me think that PC gaming
is probably pricing itself to the point of being a dinosaur, how much
more likely is it that companies in the industry might be thinking the
same thing? They are not stupid.

Dont get a Gf3!

So far the only software realy using it is 3dMark2001 and that is a sad
game to play. I for one is waiting until Unreal 2 comes out (2Q2002) and
then time will tell what graphics card is the top one
Gf4/Radeon2/KyroIII or whatever.

I you do insist on buying a console then get a Gamecube it will rock and
for 2/3 the price of an Xbox. Remember it's the software that really
matters.

Regards

Bruno

PS. To satisfy my urge for new hardware I got myself a KyroII card two
months ago and it rocks while being cheap at the same time.

Hey Andrew, I'm in the same position as you, and really don't know what path
to take yet. I know I spend around $600/ year on the Pc for upgrades, and
figure If I get the Xbox for $400 , it should last at least 2years so that's
$200/year for that system. I'd want to see how Morrowind looks on the Xbox
first , before I buy one .

haven't tried it on my 36" which is a WEGA XBR HDTV 4:5 tube. HDTV (or
1080i) is the units ability. Standard RCA or even SVHS inputs are 480i. The
Sony's don't support pro-scan (720i) but it wouldn't matter anyway.

Because your TV is HDTV doesn't mean it plays everything in HDTV. I didn't
buy the HDTV tuner yet. Waiting for them to pan out. The SONY has all sorts
of lip sync issues while the Panasonic is the best and also over $1000. By
next year the formants will settle out and SONY may incorporate
Progressive-scan in the tuner and interpolate to 1080. Maybe.
