Why does Vuescan "change colors" when I change output color space option ?

The question is in the tittle of my post.
Can somebody can tell me why output colors are changed when I change
output color space option in Vuescan, for instance from Adobe RGB to
ProPhoto RGB ?
RGB numbers should of course change but colors should not...
(I mean, of course, for colors INSIDE Adobe RGB gamut, so for images
which are NOT color clipped in Adobe RGB...).
