Hopefully someone has dealt with this before:

The manual for the ABit PX5 motherboard doesn't show a pin layout for
the USB pin block. I'm trying to add a USB cable (from the motherboard
to the external of my computer case) to my computer and need to know
where to plug it into on the board. The cable I have accepts 5 pins
per USB port on the motherboard side. What pins do I plug it into?

TIA! *E-MAIL* responses appreciated. I do support and contribute to
usenet newsgroups, just don't visit these in particular that often and
so I probably won't check back here to much. Thanks again!!

You will need a BELK1N USB MOTHERBOARD DUAL PORT CABLE (belkin part
#F3UOO1). Its about 10-15 dollars. You can either enable one or both usb
sockets (ports).

You will notice on the abit motherboards (IT5H, PX5 and TX5 anyway) that
there are actually 16 pins for the USB. Pin 1 is marked and is located
closest to the edge of the board and farthest away from the keyboard
connection. Pin 2 is right above it and is MISSING. So with 7 pins on the
top and 8 on the bottom, only the bottom pins are the ones used for this
application (pins
1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15).

Now the first 4 pins (1,3,5,7) are for the first usb port or socket and the
next four pins (9,11,13,15) are for the second usb port or socket. Total of
8 pins! Divided in half, 4 and 4.

The BELKIN part you just bought comes next. It has 2, 5 pin connectors on
it. Each one identical to the other. 5 pins, 5 wires (red, white, green,
black, flat black). Notice also that there is a difference in the black
wires on each 5 pin connector. One is a shinny one and the other is a flat
or dull looking color. REMEMBER THIS! The shinny black one is the actual
ground and the dull one is the shield. Big difference. Disregard the flat,
dull black wires, in fact pull them out of the 5-pin connector. Do this with
a needle. There is a very small plastic "finger" that holds these wires into
the plastic connector. A regular sewing needle is what I usually use when
moving wires around in a connector. Using the needle, carefully and gently
lift up the finger that is holding in the dull black wire in the 5-pin
connector. Once the "finger" is up you can pull out the wire quite easily.
Do this on each 5-pin connector. TaDa, now you have 2, 4 pin connectors
(even though the connector still has 5 AVAILABLE spots). Just what we need
for the 8 pins on the bottom of the motherboard. One problem though, one of
the connectors will have the colors reversed in the connector. Don't panic.
Now that you are good at moving pins OUT of connectors, you can work on
putting them back IN. One of the connectors is just perfect to fit on pins
9,11,13,15 since it will simple OVERHANG the end of the pins on the
motherboard with a BLANK on the connector. Just move the pins around on the
second connector so that it will OVERHANG the first pin with a blank
connector.

Ok, how do we get these two five pin things onto the 8 pins on the
motherboard? Assuming that the following is a representation of the BOTTOM
ROW of pins. Look how you can use what came in the package without having
to buy anything else.
OVERHANG 1 3 5 7
BLANK red white green black
9 11 13 15 OVERHANG
red white green black BLANK

Now that the connections are physically made on the motherboard, go back and
DOUBLE CHECK that the color sequence is RED-WHITE-GREEN-BLACK! Make sure
that both are in the same order on the motherboard (not in the 5 pin
connectors)

Make sure that USB support is ENABLED in the system bios and then allow
Windows 98 to set up the USB software (if not already installed).
