I have been using a Panasonic camcorder with conventional cassettes for
video recording. I am now looking for replacing it with a Digital camcorder
with HD and want to assess all the additional hardware, software and
knowledge of the camera and my Computer Operating System Windows XP I need
to acquire for making a successful use of the new camera.
I need to reach the stage where the various videos recorded on the camera
can be saved on my computer with appropriate file names for authoring and
burning to a DVD. Once this is achieved, it would be quite simple to author
and burn a DVD with a software like Nero.

Specifically, I need to understand the following aspects:

1) Is the video camera to be connected to my computer with a standard
connector to USB port? Does the connector come with the camera?
2) Will the Windows XP on my computer recognize the HD automatically or
would I have to follow any procedure?
3) Can I select the video recording format or is it design-specific to the
camera? Is there any camera which records the videos in mpeg2 or mpeg4
format?
4? A camera HD of 30 GB lasting for 7.5 hrs of recording is bound to have
several distinct occasions of recording. Can each different recording
session be recorded with a separate file name like 01.mp4, 02.mp4 etc.? Or
will the entire Hard Disk recording be one continuous file?
5) Which software can be used for copying the files to the computer HD so
that each separate video can be saved with a suitable name? Windows Movie
maker or Nero (which version required?)

Uses a IEEE-1394 port (Firewire).
Maybe some use USB 2.0.

Depends on the Video Card and the Video Editor you have. The computer must
be able to handle the 1920 x 1080 Video. Takes a lot of processor and Video
Card.

Probably specific to the camera. The Camera should have the transfer
software the converts the Raw Video to some other format such as AVCHD,
MPEG-2 HD, and WMV-HD formats

Yes, a different filename each time you start and stop the recording (not
pause).

Windows Movie Maker is not good for HD video. And Nero is junk.

First off, you need to decide which camera you want to get.
Then you read that camera's manual, which can often be found at the
manufacturer web site as a PDF file.

Most HD Video cameras connect via 1394 (firewire port) and use their own
software for importing the Video to the Computer.

Once the Video is imported to the computer, you can edit to your hearts
content.
There are Two primary Video editors that do HD editing.
Power Director 7
http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/products/main_4_en_US.html
Read the requirements for the Computer specs.

and Pinnacle Studio 12
http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Home/

You would need a very robust computer with a firewire port and Video Editor
to edit HD video.
