I bought a new computer to replace my ailing HP compaq but it comes
with Windows 7 already installed. I'm currently in touch my email with
an HP tech but thought I would ask here too. I wish to set up a dual
boot system with Ubuntu linux and Windows XP (as I had on my old
HP compaq). The 'tech' says that neither Windows XP nor Ubuntu
will run on this 'pavilion' !!

On the HP compaq there are two distinct physical hard drives and
when I start the PC a menu appears offering me a choice of which
operating system I wish to use (Ubuntu or Windows). I cannot find
whether the Pavilion has two hard drives!

Does anyone have a newer HP computer?

as for XP: dunno

for Ubuntu: get (download, burn) an Ubuntu Live CD, check whether it boots and
runs. If it does, you're OK for Ubuntu.

I don't have any experience with the lesser versions of win7,
but unless the version you have can't be made to do what you want, I'd not
go back to xp. Might be easier to make hardware work with win7
than to get XP drivers for your computer. All depends on exactly
what you have.
Assume you've checked the vendor site for xp drivers??

Yes I have the 'ubuntu live cd' version 5.10 - but what about my other
questions?

Yes.. but their site isn't very helpful in this regard.
I think I'll transfer the entire system from the old to the new
computer. The guy to do this is "Bernie The Computer Doctor"
in Thornhill, Ontario. (I've used him before).

I guess you are not joking.

Disk Management

Physical disks listed as Disk 0, Disk 1, Disk 2, ...

Take it back.

Then go to a reputable local builder and have one built to spec with
both the hardware and software configs you want.

I have a friend who asked me to install XP inplace of his Win7 on his

I enquired from a local dealer, and was told many of these new
machines won't allow any OS other than Win7 and up, including OS's
such as Ubuntu.

This is utter nonsense. I have a Pavillion that is about 3 years old and
it runs 12.04 64bit very nicely. It came with Windows Vista and I
upgraded it Win7, it was my grandson's computer. He got a laptop and is
quite satisfied with it and so I got the HP Pavillion. The hard drive was
failing and so I replaced it and put 12.04-64 on it. Works great!
