I use a Palm Tungsten E2 with DateBk 5, Bonsai and Ultrasoft Money to
keep myself organised. I've also got nine years of data and memos, all
based on the Palm operating system. I'm really happy with that setup.

I can't say that I keep my eye on the PDA market, but I have the sense
that the days of the Palm operating system are numbered. Is that
right? Ideally I'd like to go on with my present Palm-based setup
(incrementally upgraded) for the foreseeable future. If that's not
possible, should I be thinking of jumping ship now, and if so what is
the least painful way for me to do it?

Cheers!

Palm and PDAs in general are a dying breed mainly
due to so-called "smartphones". Investing $300 or
more in a new PDA at this point-in-time
technology-wise is probably not a wise economic
decision unless you are totally committed to using
two devices, which is totally possible.

Maybe best bet is to keep your Palm based system
since you say you are "really happy with that
setup" and see where things go, if anywhere, in
this economic environment.

Hi Pegleg,

I'm happy to go down the smartphone route, but I'd want one with Palm
software. I just did some research and discovered that maybe the Palm
Centro would work for me. I guess what I'm worried about is that the
Palm OS is not much longer for this world and it might be better for
me to port myself across to something else (Windows?) earlier rather
than later.

Is there some sort of easy way to keep the data and software I
currently use on a Windows-based system? I'm thinking of something
like the converters that used to convert Wordperfect stuff over the MS
Word in ye olden dayes.

There must be a lot of people who have moved away from Palm, how did
you do it?

Cheers,

Martin

One strategy has served me well...
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If it's doing what you want, keep doin it.

Do you really need to carry around 9 years worth of memos?
I hope you exported it all in a format that you can read
on your PC when your palm breaks. Once you've done that,
you can convert after the catastrophe happens.

In fact, I kept the TX all the time and now I am very happy with both,
Centro and TX.

Missing Sync for the Palm is a great argument for Palm and also
Now-Up-To-Date (which may be replaced by the upcoming NightHawk).

The OP could have been my own thoughts word-for-word.

The sticking point for me is a hierarchical list tool to replace
BrainForest.

MS Word in Outline mode would do the job just fine.... but so far
I haven't seen anything from the MS world.

Have you ever looked at Bonsai from Natara? From what I recall of
BrainForest, Bonsai is similar, and it has Palm, Windows Mobile and
Windows Desktop versions.

You said your Palm still does your job, so why the rush to upgrade it.
I've read Palm is working on a Linux based OS, I'm going to wait for it.

I've been hearing about Palm's move to linux for years now, but
nothing concrete has seemed to happen. If it leads to more stability,
then I'm all for it. (I find my Palm Z22 and T|X very useful, but the
problem is that they are so useful that I rely on them, and then I
start getting repeated crashes and crash loops that make me hate the
fact that I rely on them.) Also I'm all for it if I could run some of
my favourite linux tools, in particular an ssh client that is reliable
and secure. Unfortunately, if you try google searches on palm, you
find articles from years ago full of excitement about Palm's move to
linux, anticipating a release soon, or complaining that the release
will be delayed until 2007. I really want to believe that I'll be
able to buy a palm pda running linux, but history does not support
this belief.

Check your software. I have both the TX and Z22 and they haven't
crashed for months. Your problem is not hardware...

I don't use the Z22 much anymore, now that I have the T|X. The T|X
seems to get into a crash loop sometimes when I use wifi. Sometimes
when I browse with blazer, the T|X crashes and gets into a crash loop.
It happened just this morning, and the only way out was a "system
reboot" (which is neither a soft nor hard reboot, but brings up the
T|X with wifi and some other functionality disabled). Once I was
booted into this restricted running mode, if I did a soft reboot, it
got back into a reboot loop. I got out by doing a "system reboot",
then deleting pssh, an ssh client plus terminal emulator similar to
the windows putty program. Then I did a soft reboot (and cheered
because the reboot loop disappeared) re-installed pssh and configured
it and everything works again.

So maybe it is software, but it isn't clear how to reproduce it. It
just happens sometimes. As for software, I've been gradually
stripping out my installed software to see if stability returns once
again. The problem is that if installing software makes the device
unreliable, then the device is useless unless I use it only as a PDA,
i.e., only for the calendar, memos, todos etc. But even Palm promotes
it as much more than that.

Running an OS with virtual memory should at least make it harder for a
rogue application to crash the device.

Also, just because your hardware never crashes doesn't mean I don't
have a hardware problem with my hardware. There could be something
like a small crack in a printed circuit board or a solder connection
that causes a crash only under just the right, hard-to-reproduce
conditions.

Use my TX WiFi all the time, no problems.

I have no crash problems with Blazer.

It's a pain, but if you really want to find the problem here's how:

1> First determine it's not a hardware problem.
Do a *hard* reset to wipe the unit clean and bring it back to a
factory fresh condition. *Don't hot sync* after this or any bad
software will be synced back. Use the TX for a few weeks with *only*
the built in software. Put it through it's paces. If it continues to
crash then the problem is in the TX.

2> If the TX passes the above test then load one of your programs. Use
it for a few days. If no problems then go for another program and a
few more days. Continue one program at a time until you find the
offending program or programs.

3> Once it's stable, then erase the Palm TX sync folder on your PC.
Then hot sync and a new folder will be created with the stable
software.

>have a hardware problem with my hardware.

That's true. But your original post said you had crash problems with
*both* your TX and Z22. I thought it unlikely that both your Palms
had hardware problems...

You shouldn't assume either a hardware or software problem, but it's
likely a Palm OS software problem. There may be no solution for it.

I have a SW crash problem with my Palm T-C, which I can reproduce.
It is caused when inputing data into some programs, such as Web, the
crash is in a Palm OS text routine.
A Palm tech chap suggested I completely reinstall my SW. I wasn't
prepared to go through that task at the time because of many installed
programs and their data, so I simply recoved doing the Reset on the
back, followed by pushing the Jog (Navigator). If I didn't carry a paper
clip to press the Reset on the back, the battery would run down and I'd
lose my data if not backed up.
I got a used second T-C for testing and it has the same occasional crash
problem, with no additional SW installed, so I assumed I saved myself
much time doing a reinstall which would have accomplished nothing.
I'll just chug on, trying to avoid causing an occasional crash.

Regarding backup, I have a 1GB SD card (the max on the T-C) always
inserted, on which I backup everything.
