Outputing to a TV via HDMI

I would like to watch BBC iPlayer on my large screen TV from an HP HDX
X18-1320EA laptop. The first time thst I tried this I connected the HDMI
lead, and set the TV to input from the HDMI port. As I brought up Firefox, I
could see its image on both the laptop and the TV screen. However I couldn't
get any sound from the TV.
Today, I intended to ensure that I covered all the sound setting options in
pulseaudio but this time I couldn't even get a picture! I am obvously
missing a setting or three.
Anyone have suggestions?
