There is probably no reason why you should not use the latest version 3.0.1
available from <http://kernel.ORG/>
I have an old laptop that is happy running Mepis, Lubuntu, PCLinuxOS,
Zenwalk, and Puppy. It has some issues with the latest Vector V7, but
they are minor, and fixable.

Insufficient information. CPU speed - RAM, etc. all should play a part in
your selection.
Given the dearth of information, my first choice would most likely be
Debian.
I've got Debian 4 Etch (the most current version when installed) with
XFCE running quite happily on a 10 year old IBM 240X Thinkpad. 500MHz
PIII, 192MB RAM, 12GB hard drive.
From a practical standpoint, most any version of Linux will run on most
any hardware. It's the GUI/desktop that's the problem. They are the RAM
hogs. I suggest you consider LXDE or XFCE as they are "lightweight." Or
you could just run a window manager and launchbar instead.

This is all great info thanks guys I have 1GB of RAM so I may have more
questions but I'm ready to start with Linux now. Thanx again.
Sorry to come in late but adding to the LXDE that was suggested this is
all packaged up nicely in Lubuntu. I installed it a few days ago on my
netbook and it's really running nice.

I just installed openSUSE 11.4 KDE on an old compaq evo n160. It has a
PIII 1.133 Ghz and 512mb ram. Runs pretty well and 3D effects work.
