Anyone Tried Win4Lin?
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this product and how it compares to using wine. [link] After a change at work that now allows me to remote in from Linux I only have one program that forces me to use Windows and that is Microsoft Access. I tried that with wine about a year ago. While it installed okay I couldn't... more »

Print to a (postscript) file
Is there a way to let lp not send its output to the printer, but to a file? Or is there another way to print a document to a file?

FAT32 vs NTFS, can Linux be used under NTFS?
I'm confused, I was told initially that Linux had to be put on a system that was formatted to FAT32. Yet I've seen posts about Linux under NTFS. One of the main reasons I've not switched from Windows to Linux, besides tons of Windows programs I use and learning curve, was precisely because of the file size issue re FAT32. I now have a hdd... more »

Remove Lock Screen
I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my netbook. It looks great, but I have no use for the Lock Screen feature. I accidentally keep clicking on the button in the Main Menu, and pressing ALT-F1 instead of ALT-Fx (clumsy fingers on that small keyboard), which goes ahead and locks the screen for me. How can I remove or disable the Lock Screen feature entirely?... more »

How to get number of pages of a postscript file
I want to get the number of pages of a postscript file. At the moment I do it with the following statement: PAGES=$(awk '/^%%Pages:/ { print $2; }' <${FILE}) But I saw that sometimes there is also a zero. For example I have seen: %%Pages: 1 %%Pages: 1 0 %%Pages: 2 0 %%Pages: 4 Until now the first number is always the number of pages. But why is... more »

Which distributions of Linx still support lpr/lprng printing by default?
I have just found out that the arseholes behind debian decided to drop support for lpr/lprng printing. The result is that firefox/iceweael, open office, etc can no longer print directly to the lpr/lprng printing system. There is a bodgy entry you can make to gtkrc that allows you to enter a lpr command, but this totally ignores all the configuration(papersize,... more »

Log console boot messages
Is there a way to log to file the messages during bootup about services starting, those that end with [OK] or [FAILED]? Thanks, Paul

zmodem upload with rz
I can't upload a file larger then 2 gigs with rz. The OS (linux 2.4/ext3) supports large files but it dies at 2 gigs. anyone know how to get rz compiled for large files? I use SecureCRT under WinXP, maybe its that which has a problem sending the large files?

Linux Mint - terminal configuring
Hey all! I have a simple question, whenever I open my terminal from gnome it starts with a ASCCIart "splashscreen" (donno how to describe it better...) It is a logo with some "nice" text of some kind. I promise to take my cynical-psyche-questions to alt.cynical.psyche, but this one is related to Linux...... more »
