I set up a linux machine for a friend who lives about 100 miles
away. I configured the machine to use dhcp to get an IP adress.

I tried to burn some ISOs (parted and other things) on several DVD-RWs.
None was usable: NONE WAS BOOTABLE. Burning on regular write-once DVDs
worked fine. But DVD-RWs: only failures.

What is the reason for this insane bug? Is the boot sector of RWs messed

Hi experts here,
I am looking for a linux distro, that is optimized ooB to run on cheap
SD cards wo hard disks.
It should take the specificities of SD cards into consideration
(blockwise writes) and hold as much as possible on ram (2 gigs
available) to avoid slowing down.
Debian based would have been nice, but is not a must.

Pretty much a total newbie to Ubuntu!
Installed version 10.10 on daughter's Vaio laptop. This is the second time
due to a trashed HD.
I notice when I start Ubuntu, there is no drum roll, although I think there
was during installation and final setup.
