In addition to backing up, there is one other gotcha.
*******
The MBR (master boot record) is located at sector 0. If the
Windows installer CD starts to run, and it finds an MBR is
present, it won't replace it. Later, when Windows tries to boot,
the boot will fail. And that is because the MBR is compatible

There was an Antec power supply, with connectors labeled "Fan only"
or the like. It consists of a yellow and a black wire, and two chained
Molex connectors. As far as I know, fan speed is via voltage control
on those. The fans are likely being fed about 7V or so, to slow them
down. The same voltage feeding the fan within the power supply, might

If you ever feel the need to add/replace the case fans in your Antec, you
might want to consider these:
[link] I know they're a
bit expensive, just for fans, but they are worth every penny. With the low
noise adaptor atteched, they give plenty of cooling and barely make a sound.

 Yeah, it seems so.
I opened the case up and did a bit of shuffling around today. Moved
the graphics card to another PCIE slot to the left of its previous one
and the stable system temperature has dropped to 44 C. This case
cooling seems picky wrt card placement. The only other PCI card is a
phone modem in the leftmost PCI slot.

My friend has Unbuntu & wants me to
replace it with Windows. What would I need & how would I do it? He's
looking for the cheapest way.
