Normally, something like that shouldn't happen.
To verify the basic operation of the router, use a single FTP
session as a test case. Try it with the router, and without the
router. You shouldn't see a difference between the two. If you
do, then either it is a wireless performance issue, or it is
a router issue. But that isn't the only aspect of router performance.

One thing you have to consider, is running Torrents involves making
many connections, and there will be a large number of connections
where the resources have to be recovered after the connection is
released. It could be related to something like that.

"Maximum Simultaneous Connections is a measure of how many connections
(or sessions) that a router is capable of simultaneously supporting.
This aspect of a router's performance is related to the robustness of
its routing code as well as its available memory. It is not necessarily
related to a router's maximum speed. Test details can be found here.
The maximum possible number of connections is 200 due to IxChariot
license limitations."
Right off hand, the highest number of connections that comes to mind on
a home router, might be 1024. It is too bad the above test chart, doesn't
test whether that number of connections works or not.
This article mentions that the max connections can be tuned in the
client software.
Torrents are hard on routers, and the chart at the bottom shows some
of the symptoms other people are seeing. With some tuning, you
may be able to stay within the limits of the router. Alternately,
a newer firmware for the router, could fix initial design problems.

I reset the pig to factory defaults and turned off the wireless
transmitter. Works ok now. The wireless pig never worked anyway.
Couldn't get my laptop to even see a fracking signal. Don't buy a
Netgear Wireless N 300 WNC2000. At least I could connect wirelessly to
my old Belkin with only WEP security.

"Cons: Overheats easily if you go to full Wireless N speeds. will cut out."
I see a vent on the top for cooling. You might want to stand it
up, to aid cooling.
I also notice it doesn't use external antennas. That doesn't guarantee
a "fail" on the radio operation, but is not an encouraging sign.
