Found this info while looking around. .DJVU isn't as mainstream as .PDF
yet, don't know if it ever will be since .DJVU is raster and .PDF is
vector. It does load very fast in the freeware, no-install viewer,
WinDjView:

http://windjview.sourceforge.net/

I loath .PDF files, but what are you going to do since .pdf has been
around for so long.

Regardless, this technique will be obvious to the more experienced in
the group:

http://www.lajag.com/a-free-way-to-convert-djvu-file-to-pdf/79/

I don't know how much longer that info will be there, so I'll copy and
paste it here:

A free way to convert .djvu file to .pdf

A short guide on converting djvu file to acrobat format. Since djvu is
not widely supported in portable devices such as pdas, such conversion
will be essential. Here are the steps by making use of print function of
the djvu viewer.

1- Download FreePDF here:

http://www.shbox.de/fpxpdownload.htm

2- Download and Install windjview (I suppose you have done so):

http://sourceforge.net/projects/windjview

3- Open a djvu file with WINDJVIEW
4- Choose "print" and SELECT FreePDF as the PRINTER.

Indeed, this applies to any document that supports the print function.
_______________________________________________________________________

Note that, in order to install FreePDF, you'll need to have GhostScript
installed first:

"Requirements
FreePDF XP needs this:
– Windows 2000, XP or Server 2003
– The Windows Driver Library „Driver.cab“
– GhostScript (must be installed before FreePDF XP)
– Redmon (will be installed by FreePDF XP)
The FreePDF XP Assistant (fpAssist.exe) must be started at User-login."

GhostScript is described here:

http://www.ghostscript.com/awki

downloadable from here:

http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/

Now if anybody can come up with an easy, freeware way to convert .PDF to
.DJVU, we might have an answer to the .PDF viewer problem.

Is there any way of extracting the contents of a .DJVU or .DJV file to
text etc so that it can be loaded into Open office and saved ad a
conventoinal file that could be manupliated ie laid out better. I have a
book that has been done in this format and would dearly love to get into
a usable format

Sorry Maurice, if the file contains only images, the only way I know of
is to OCR it somehow.

???? I don't see how we disagree very much here. I said that .djvu files
load fast in WinDjView and you said that it loads instantly. Depending
on a .djvu file's size, they don't load instantly because thumbnails
need to be generated. Still, the process is extremely fast. For
instance, a 55 mb .djvu file I have loads in three seconds well enough
for you to start reading it.

However, they both deal with a different file format of course.

But of course it will, and I said as much in the OP:

I didn't write that, Maurice Helwig did. Yrrah, please pay more
attention to attribution in your replies.

As long as you watch your attribution.

Depends on the file contents. If it only contains images, then the
File/Export Text... function is grayed out (logically so, to.)

Hmmm. This method would not very practical for processing an entire book
like Maurice was wanting to do.

Maybe if he first converted the book from .djvu to .pdf as my OP
described and then if he used FREE PDF Tools (note: another program that
requires that Ghostscript be installed first):

http://www.pdfill.com/pdf_tools_free.html

to convert the .pdf file to .jpgs or some other image format for OCRing.

Also note: I haven't tried this program.

Thanks for your replies - I guess I will have to live with this book the

I'm in the same situation, Maurice. However, that freeware .djvu reader:

http://windjview.sourceforge.net/

works with .djvu files the way everybody would like to see a .pdf reader
work with .pdf files: quickly and with good, reliable features. Since
it's a no install program too, I've decided that having another program
on my computer to read yet another file format isn't as repulsive as I
originally though.

Ok I guess it is worth a try John.
I will give it a try.

Have been Googling some more using this search term line:

+"convert djvu" -shareware -"universal document" -"to pdf" -postscript

There are converters out there, but they always seem to convert the
files to some weird, rare file format or do something else strange. For
instance, "DjVuLibre":

http://djvu.sourceforge.net/index.html

Among it's features is this command line tool:

"ddjvu: converts DjVu documents to PBM/PGM/PPM images."

The formats are considered to be intermediate formats and not to be used
for file storage.

Then there's PDFRead:

http://pdfread.sourceforge.net/

which converts "an image out of each page, enhancing the image and then
collating the images in a device-specific format."

Gee thanks. THAT does us a lot of good! Not only that, but a lot of the
converters out there only work on a Mac or in Linux.

Somebody claimed that you can use Irfanview to "batch convert DjVu to a
number of other formats". I gave this a try, but Irfanview only converts
the page you're on. We're looking for a program that will convert each
page to a single image file in sequence.

My guess is that, like with the .pdf file format, this is a process
which is carefully avoided being made possible by the developers. It's
just not in their interest to make this easily possible because then,
you'd be able to get around having to store a file in their format.

I guess at this point, I'd have to throw my hands up in the air and say
"It's not possible!" Maybe somebody else will have better luck finding
something that works to do what we want.

Note that at this point, I'm not referring to converting .djvu files to
.pdf, but rather .djvu to any image format. And specifically, batch
converting all of the pages in a multi-page .djvu document into
individual image files.

To drive the nail in that coffin further in, I just tried both DjVuLibre
(the programmers have simply lost touch with mainstream humanity and
have developed a collection of utilities that the average person will
look at and simply say, "WTF???") and PDFRead, which simply does not work.

However, this isn't much different from the way that it's impossible to
batch convert a .pdf file consisting of only images on each page into a
series of image files.

To be fair, the program's port to Windows was probably only a cursory
effort. For instance, there are no help files. There is a file with some
info, but it's not really a help file.

And that's all from me in this thread unless anybody else has something
to suggest for converting .djvu files to image files the way I mentioned.

Thanks for your efforts John. I appreciate it.
I keep across this news group each day and get a lot from it in spite of
the "differences" that occur from time to time.
I will do some more searching around and let you know if I find anything

Are you sure ? I think PDF Explorer may be able to do that.

http://homepage.oniduo.pt/pdfe/pdfe.html

You will need to find the last freeware version however if you want to
try it out (freeware).

Regards, John.

Well... not really. It was more of a challenge to others to see if they
could find something.

Thanks John. As it happens, I have a copy of version 1.4 (beta) of the
program archived (current version is 1.5 build 57). I'll check it out
tomorrow.

What is the last freeware version and where can it be found?

I have vage recollections of a PDF Explorer (?) which was supposed to
be freeware but in actual fact was time limited.

Yup. This is a a wild goose chase. There is no last Freeware version for
time-limited apps.

Program: PDF Explorer
Company: RTT
W: $W
Ware: was (Trialware: time-limited (30 days) renewable) (free for
persional use)

Possibly PDFE15B52FullSetup.zip. Don't know if it is available for
download anywhere. You might have better luck looking for something
like PDFE15Setup.zip.
