I'd like to be able to capture a series of stills from a movie - like one
shot every x seconds until I tell it to stop... I know I can grab stills
from vlc but that's one at a time and hard to grab the exactly right frame
cuz there's a bit of lag time...

If you have the movie saved to disk and are using a video player, you can
use UMPlayer and press "s" as fast for as long as you wish and capture as
many images as you like.

http://www.umplayer.com/.

If you are watching online, you can use PicPick (portable) and press prt-sc
as fast as you like and capture similar to UMPlayer.

http://www.picpick.org/

There are frame by frame video editors also if the above do not work for
your needs.

Free Video to JPG Converter. Extract frames from video files to JPG files
with one mouse click.

hjmler formulated on Tuesday :
Haven't tried it yet, but this sounds like what you are looking.

ImageGrab

ImageGrab is a free program that you can use to extract images from all
kind of videos including AVI, MPEG, WMV, live video streams,
un-encrypted DVDs and many others formats.

It’s pretty easy to use and works well! Also, the great thing about
this program is that it requires no installation, just download and run
the EXE file, so it won’t slow down your computer or add keys to your
registry! That’s what I like to hear!

*****The intervalometer is a powerful feature of ImageGrab for
extracting and saving images automatically at a given time interval, or
if you prefer to extract a frame every x frames.

Would appreciate any feedback :-)

Free Video to JPG Converter also allows grabbing video snapshots for
given intervals.

It is an ideal tool to make photo galeries from your home video. You
can extract for example every hundredth video frame or frames in every
10 seconds.

Imagegrab has got to be one of the best little utilities I've used for
capturing a series of stills, yet it's hardly ever discussed in this
category. I haven't tried it with Windows 7 yet, but I've used it with other
versions of Windows.

http://paul.glagla.free.fr/imagegrab_en.htm

It needs ffdshow which can be found here:

You could also try the old reliable Imagegrabber I or II which are still
archived on Videohelp.com. II would be better for your purposes, and
according to one poster, it still works with later versions of Windows.

Any programs that are recommended and start with Free*****converter will
usually have some form of adware in the package that you have to watch for
during install. Imagegrabber and Imagegrab are free of everything except the
dll's and app necessary to run the program.

I never thought anyone else here used the program, so I posted my
recommendation of this before I read yours. I've been using it for quite a
number of years and it seems to be almost a secret here. It's an excellent
program for capturing stills and the valuometer gives you the ability to
select as many frames as you want.

Thanks for the feedback. I also visited the links that you provided
and downloaded a couple as well. Always best to have a variety :-)

umplayer works very well - thanks a heap... for some reason it seems to give
me much better quality than vlc, and i especially like the options for
different aspect ratios ... lots of my stuff is from analog sources 1.33:1,
4:3, etc and other stuff was forced into various widescreen ratios and looks
like crap from a fun house mirror in other players... just wish i could save
out the vids once i get the aspect ratio correct... the free vid to jpg
apps works ok too, though it outputs pretty small files, not suitable for
boxcover art...

doing single frame caps from vlc is still clunky and i couldn't figure out
how to automatically capture bunches and bunches of stills

UMPlayer is the best all around video player I've ever used. It is a great
piece of freeware.

In windows, Avisynth frameserver can select
every Nth frame - amone huge amount of other options -
and store it as a serie of pictures.

All in a single short script.
Avisynth scripts are directly usable
as video source in multiple video editors and players.

Note that I recommend Avisynth rather for experienced users.
