With terragen, you can create decent images (though not realy great, imho)
with the freeware version. Basically, it lacks the use of texture and colors
that will make it life like. I also find the randomness generator very
limited (or there are to few possibilities for the random generator to
choose from) But then I frequently use Bryce II (came as a full install on a
English magazine some X years ago)

Then you also have Genesis II Preeware Edition (just found it)
http://www.geomantics.com/
I have not tried it yet, but the gallery prommisses quite something.

In the download section (you'll need to register first) there are also some
other nice looking generation tools!

There seems a wole Bryce internet community alove
http://c.webring.com/hub?ring=7856

http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Software/Graphics/3D/Rendering_and_Modelling/Bryce/

But finding the soft is searching like a needle in a haystack... even
with Good Old Google, download.com or majorgeeks...

Where does Bryce hide?

Hmmm... I think I put it wrongly:

I'm afraid Bryce is commercial software; the verion of Bryce I had was
magazinware (eg only free if you bought the magazine) I got it more then 4
years ago.

The last known owner of the software (to my knowledge) is Corel
(http://www.corel.com) but unfortunately, they don't do any developing for
it anymore, just collecting fees for sending a box with cd and manuals.

execpt for the little 'flaw' it is commercial softwarware , it is by far out
the best landscape generator (IMHO).

I'm afraid I have to disagree entirely. Terragen images, when
it comes to photo realism, are *far* superior to those of Genesis,
whose images look like they belong in a 90s video game. Granted,
you can add trees and things in Genesis (only 4 in the freeware
version), but the results are still the same; the images are very
poor compared to Terragen's. Compare some of my own feeble
attempts with Terragen (I've seen people do wonders with it),
to Genesis. IMO, there is no comparison.

Indeed, if I look at the gallery, Terragen does a better job as Genesis.
However, I never got even close to the results they claim to be Terragen.
The results i got while fiddling with Genesis for some time can, however, be
compared with the result shown by the link you gave.

But then, for me it is only a toy I play with for an hour or so, and then
leave it for a couple of months. Since I still have that Bryce version
laying
around, I tend to use that one more often (though the newer bryce verions
are even better)

That's what I heard equally,... but tastes differ... I do not believe
that genesis is as poor as a 90s video game,... not the video games
that I played ;-)

These are some of the best Genesis landscapes that I,
personally, have seen, and they don't compare at all
to the photo-realism of Terragen. They are nice, in
their own way, but they don't come close, IMO.

The same for me, too; though I envy Genesis' ability
to add 'structures', I never did like it's results.

Yes, I agree that tastes differ, absolutely.

well, the official link is

As said: It is commercial. Again, It has never been released as freeware,
only as magazin ware.

I cannot (since I dont know any link) , an will not (since I want and try to
comply to this newsgroups charter/FAQ) give a link here.

I understood ther was a big fight about magazine ware being freeware or not
just before I joined the group. Since I don't want to take any risks, I will
not upload or mail my magazine copy.

I also would like to ask readers not to answer for pro's and con's to this
point of view, since I don't want to get this argument up again. An upload
of my copy is not gonna happen.

I frequently find it very confusing to parse your messages. This is something
you could change easily, by simple use of a sig deliminator. I would then
be able to quickly scan for meaning in the message body. Spared this large
distraction of all that other text appearing to be part of that message body.

This is a one-time request. It's to let you in on what would work for me,
and others, your potential audience. Needless to say, it is your choice
how you want to format (ie whether you want to take this small measure
which would provide us readability in your posts).

I'm always in to good advice... been reading for long (among) these

etiquette... so i'm happy to take an advice.

... sig deliminator, is this what you mean? See signature...

Fair enough. You don't happen to remember which magazine do you? Might
be available from the Back Issues Dept.

After som research on the internet, I found someone who had written down the
exact information:

Graphics Deal of the Month
Metatools BRYCE 2, full version for less than $10 !
November issue (88) of PC Format (Future publishing) brings you full version
of this ultimate 3D world-building software. Don't miss this one !And you
can use it for upgrade to Bryce 3D for special price. And as a bonus
WINCheckIt.
Ask your news agent !

It is about the English version PC Format (part of http://futurenet.co.uk )
I couln't find any back issues though. And it is quite old : they mean
November 1998!

Though the Freeware edition is very limited, it can save the results to be

I tent to find maps generated with World Machine more 'real life' as
Terragens own fractal generator.

Also I found http://www.cybia.co.uk/3d.htm with some other Landscape
