A strange request, perhaps :-/

Learning Python (in which TAB is a block delimiter) I've discovered how
much useful would be to have a simple text editor with folding option
(blocks closable) by TAB indent and some evidence-tag (like simple
comments starting by a specific character).
E.g.

# My new life
Losing weight
More sports
Less oil & butter
New work
Indipendent
Sunday free
New hobbies
Painting
Cooking

# This month project
Pay taxes
Checkup

Imagine a different font & color for each line beginning with # and
folding on every TAB.

You could see it also as (closed folders):

#My new life
# This month project

and expanding by a simple click...and the best is that it remains a
simple text file, readible with every software in every S.O. (also
without folding).

I find it a fast and useful to write ideas with a little bit of
structure: now I'm using a Python editor (!) to plan the rough structure
of a future software (a sort of simple flow chart), but I've used it to
summarize the advices (of Internet) to choose a snowboard...

I've tried specific software with tree structure (and many other
features), but they aren't easy like simple TAB pressing and often they
use proprietary file format (often they permit exporting, but if I
uninstall it and later I want read an old file, I have to
reinstall...uff).
I know also Word ($hare) and I suppose also OpenOffice has levels, but
they aren't so simply and don't use plain text format.

I've tried to adapt Notepad++ e Jedit, but still remains some "clues" of
their programming editor nature:
Notepad++:
I can't define a user defined style with TAB delimiter
Adapting Python:
remain a strange behaviour with single '
sometime needs ":" to begin a block
Jedit:
has a strange "Java" interface
I haven't understood how to define comment line delimiter

Any idea ?

Simon

P.S. Now I'm giving a look to Scite, but it appears to be not simple to
add new languages

Simone ....

This isn't a strange request at all if you're interested
in developing applications in the Python programming language ....

Check the Python Wiki for a list of Python editors ....

http://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonEditors

The one listed on that page that I've used quite a bit
and like a lot is PyPE the Python Programmer's Editor ....

http://pype.sourceforge.net/

This is an editor written in Python by a Python developer
for Python programmers ....

It includes both the code folding and automatic indetation
features that you mentioned as well as colored syntax hi-lites
and a nice class/object browser that you can use in a separate
panel to easily navigate to different sections of your code ....

PyPE uses the wxPython GUI toolkit, so you will need to
install that first ....

http://www.wxpython.org/

The wxPython toolkit is widely used and actively developed
and sooner or later you will probably want to try it anyway
if you stick with Python programming ....

Download both the wxPython package and the Docs & Demos package
for it ....

The wxPython demo is quite impressive
and you can view the Python source code
from the demo-interface while it's running ....

The wxPython packages and PyPE install very easily
under Windows ....

The wxPython packages are installed via Windows installers
and PyPE is installed simply by un-zipping it ....

Check out notepad++

It does folding I think and is an excellent text editor.

Not at all - Vim <http://www.vim.org> will do it, as will Emacs,
<http://www.gnu.org> and search.

I know (and I'm :)...now I'm using PyScripter (1.6)to learn developing
in Python (using WxPython as library).

Now I'm searching a "reduced" version of syntax highlight & folding
editors for Python (and for many other programming languages), that
could be useful for plain text, so TAB folding and simple evidence
commands, nothing more.
I'm trying to adapt programming editor, but 'til now I can't make them
to forgive to be programming editor (strange behaviour with "'" or ":"
...).

Notepad++ is very good, but i can't use, in user defined style, TAB as
block delimiter (I'll ask to Notepad++ forum).

Simon

P.S. At worst, I will do it by Python (well, after a period of
learning!)

I hear you!

I've tried all sorts of programs with hierarchical tree structures.
While they are neat, tidy, and organized, they become a pain to use.
You inevitably run into something that's ambiguous, and don't know
quite how to file it. You end up doing way too much work to keep it
organized.

That's why I use VectorNotes, which is the only random entry and
retrieval PIM that I know of. It's almost like a "word association"
game. You enter random data with 1 or more key words. When you want to
retrieve it, just type in any keyword or string and press "find". It
instantly comes to the first page of the occurrence, and pressing find
again keeps paging down. It uses hot links, and is great for storing
and finding URL's. Actually it beats the "Favorites" folder in some
ways.

It's a very simple program for the lazy, and a work in progress, but
lightning fast. And NO ORGANIZING! :)
