ResQdisk ™ is the tool of choice for fixing hard drive problems.
ResQdisk is ideal for repairing an inaccessible hard drive and
recovering access to lost partitions. ResQdisk is the tool of
preference for recovering a drive destroyed by the CIH/Chernobyl
virus. ResQdisk supports FAT-16 and FAT-32, as well as large capacity
drives (EIDE - ATA33/66).

Don't know if it's any good - haven't tried it

"I can’t believe it. I accidentally F-disked 20GB of un-backed up
data. Is there any way to retrieve this?"

And got the above recommendation

Not freeware as far as I can tell from their site...

Don't know why you are looking for it on resq.co.il. Better download it
from www.invircible.com. This is the original one, written by Zvi Netiv
from Invircible, designed to restore broken boot sectors like after an
attack by CIH/Tchernobyl or Magistr.

It doesn't help against Opaserv/Opasoft/Brazil/Alevir though, as _that_
beast does overwrite the hard disk physically. You can only clear the
MBR with it, fdisk/format and use the hard disk again (and be more
careful this time).

Without ResqDisk, the hard disk would probably have to be dumped into
the dustbin.

Ah, Information. A good, too valuable theses days, to give it away, just
so, at no cost.

1. Resqdisk is freeware in that it contains some useful utilities
that the author (Zvi Netiv) says may be freely used. However, he
also offers other services and utilities on a pay basis.

2. I first came across resqdisk about 3 years ago when it was
able to solve a problem I had with a HDD which had become
unuseable. Ever since then it has been in my "toolbox" of useful
floppy disk utilities.

3. The thing I most commonly use resqdisk for is to make a backup
copy of "track zero" of any HDD I have to work on. With a new
HDD I make the backup as received, then make another backup after
the disk has been partitioned.

I guess this is analagous to taking precautions against registry
problems - make your backups when everything is going OK, and you
have something to get you out of trouble if things go wrong
later.

I remember having to spend quite some time reading through the
documentation when I first used resqdisk, and I would say some
care is required when using it.

This is especially so, if you are working on a computer with more
than one physical drive - just make absolutely sure you know
which drive is going to be affected by any commands you invoke.
To be really on the safe side it may sometimes pay to physically
disconnect any drive you don't want to accidentally interfere
with. Not suggesting there is anything wrong with resqdisk, but
I like to protect myself from mistakes.
