I'm reading complaints here about the latest Firefox release.

How would it be to go backwards to the last trustworthy version? Can
anyone recommend which version would be best to use at this point?
I'm running XP Pro with SP3 on a machine that's got limited memory &
speed but lots of hard disk.

Finally; do we think that TB is now hopeless, or that it'll be fixed?

Thx

Perhaps the complaints you refer to are about the Add ons and not FF itself?

I successfully went back to 2.0.0.20, running XP Pro, SP3,and It works
just fine, and without that damn annoying "awesome bar". Firefox has a
history of doing what THEY want rather than listening to users. I'll
stick with what works for me until maybe the complaints disappear. I
have a feeling that Chrome just might hurt Firefox.

You might look at this page:

Richard, what's wrong with TB? I'm using it right now and it seems to
work okay for the most part. However:

Richard, you talk of sanity, yet you post your complaints to ACF

- Sanity is... posting to the relevant news group.
Try mozilla.support.firefox

- Sanity is ... looking at the greater picture (i.e beyond your own
belly button). I have no problems with 3.0.5 AND I have the same set up
as you (XP Pro with SP3).

- Sanity is ... looking at your specific (local) set-up, before blaming
the software, which obviously is working well for most people.

- Sanity is ... not thinking yourself as the centre of the universe. "do
we think that TB is now hopeless". We? How many of you are there? Do you
speak on behalf of an official Firefox-and-TB malcontents society?

Richard,
I haven't quite figured out if you're actually having problems or
concerned about the complaints that have been discussed at length (and
sometimes futilely) in the group lately. I'm running XP Pro SP2 on this
machine with 2.5 gigs of memory, and haven't experienced any
difficulties with the current versions of FF or TB. Perhaps you might be
overloaded with extensions? I use 13 if FF and 2 in TB. They're quite
enough for my needs, but YMMV.
I've had more at times, but occasionally uninstall those I don't seem to
take advantage of. A couple of the FF addons are already on that short
list now! The point is, too much good stuff can fatten a browser, too!
With kind regards,
Ron

Mozilla urges users to switch to 3.x since support for older release
will stop (if not already stopped).

Fx 3.0.5 runs fine on my PC, WinXP Home SP3 all updates, 1 GiB RAM (32
MiB shared for onboard graphic memory)

> Finally; do we think that TB is now hopeless, or that it'll be fixed?

Well, I'm no using 1.5.0.14, but 2.0.0.19 and there are some bugs. When
I leave a message unread the folder should show this as (1) and it does,
most of the time. Sometimes, a folder won't show the number of unread
messages until I select the folder, then the number is shown again. Very
annoying when receiving a new message and none of the folders showing an
unread message...

Other than that, I'm a happy camper.

I also stayed with FF version 2 till the last update came out with the
announcement that there would be no more updates for it. I hate dislike
switching/updating my computer programs for the sake of updates. I wear
a comfy pair of shoes much in the same way, till they are no longer
practical. I use FF3 now, and am getting used to it. PrefBar is about
the only intrusive Addon I use on a regular basis. A couple of other
addons I use are HttpWatchProfessional Edition and NoScript. The KISS
principle applies to software on anyones computer.

He obviously can't trust himself to think for himself... which is about the
only sane behavior he demonstrates...

FF3 works here on Vista and XP SP3.

I disagree. But I thought your browser of choice is currently
Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Excellent troll, Mr. Bottoms! You caught me with your lie!

If your research shows that's best, there can be no dispute.

Whoops! I meant FF, not TB. I get mixed up about these mystical animal
names.

Mr. Occam: I see that you've been bitten by the ACF mudfight virus. I
made a brain error and referred to the wrong program.

I asked about Firefox here because I was interested, in particular, in
answers from people on this board. However, thanks for the mind jog:
I'll take it to the experts _also._

I'm trying to clear up an error that I made between Mozilla's two
mystical animals: I meant to type "FF" but "TB" came out my fingers.
Sorry for the confusion.

People often write here, "What's your problem: it works great for me."
Well, our systems are different. I've got about 1/5 your memory, and
can't add much more to this box. My HD is nice and big, but the clock's
only going at 1 gHz. When we report our results around here, we usually
don't give details about our systems. As we should all know, a system's
"headroom" can affect the performance of a program dramatically.

So, I'm most interested in the ability of the new version to run on my
existing system. Newer computers will come here later.
