We're in the lifeboat together. Dare I predict a rush from XP
users over to Linux? I was terrified of Linux until about three years
ago and then I downloaded WUBI. That's Linux as a tiny OS in a file.
It came bundled with a very tiny Firefox, maybe one other
application, along with Ubuntu, all on one file.
I used it for a month and was satisfied. I'll move back in with
Linux when i get creamed by a cracker.

The Kill Switch.

Where do I begin?

-- Security vulnerabilities up the boo-koo.
-- Having to pay through the ass for each update.
-- Having to upgrade hardware to accommodate their whims.
-- Massive code base that just keeps getting bigger.

I could go on. Linux has become my sole operating system. I hope this
can continue.

The Linux excuse is always "people just don't want to try something
that looks like a mobile phone." This is arrogant and wrong. Even the
Mac looks more like a mobile phone than Linux. People don't want to
'learn' Linux they want Google on their desktop and for their desktop to
look like a mobile phone.. Microsoft and Google know this. Linux is far
too foreign and complicated for me and still requires in-depth knowledge
of command type instruction...good grief ...much much more so than
Windows or my Android phone.

There is good reason why Linux never got past 1% desktop usage. Linux
lovers need to understand this. If you are the type that loves Linux or
just want to learn it...fine. Torture yourself. 99% of users are not
interested. Get over it.

The convo's moved on, in case you hadn't noticed, presumably talking
about Windows 8, but including Windows 7...

> -- Security vulnerabilities up the boo-koo.

Windows 7 is way more secure than XP - goodbye administrative privilege
by default - just like Linux.

> -- Having to pay through the ass for each update.

Windows updates have *always* been free to licensed users.

> -- Having to upgrade hardware to accommodate their whims.

Windows 7 has excellent hardware support - Linux is a bit embarrasing on
this front - but, IMO, largely due to poor manufacturer support (which
is where I put the blame).

> -- Massive code base that just keeps getting bigger.

You don't seem to know what MS dis with Windows 7 very well. A good
video on 'MinWin' from Mark Russinovich...

I also hope Linux will continue to mature and become a great desktop
environment - a long way to go yet though, IMO.
