Exclusive Computeractive Download Offer - Expires October 17, 2006
We’re giving you the full commercial version of Acronis True Image 7, worth
£28, which is one of the most popular disk backup and restore tools.
Don't mislead people in the subject then. That'd be a FREE TRIAL.
Trials tend to be free anyway.
Has anyone been able to actually download this thing? I keep getting
connection refused messages?????

Hardly freeware, though is it?
I downloaded it a few hours ago. The servers are probably overloaded.
By the way, it's the full version 7, not a trial. Users are advised to
not use the "secure zone."
You didn't read the article how to get a free serial number
"for free"?

Sure I did.
I'd call it "temporarily offered as freeware". 80)>
At any rate, as I write this the server is overloaded with requests.

No go here either. Got the registration info okay using a dodgeit.com
throwaway address.

"Due to widespread exposure of this free Computeractive download within

This download is slow as a turtle, no even slower, so if the program works
as fast as the download, it will be possible to restore my system in about
four years or so.

It's not being temporarily offered as freeware. It is the "full
commercial version of Acronis True Image 7, worth £28", which is being
temporarily given away.
Big difference.
>At any rate, as I write this the server is overloaded with requests.
Quite. Heavily throttled server; punters going back and back in hope
of a freebie, download managers beating at the door; every so often a
download works to keep things ticking over (?) - meanwhile the profile
of the app and the magazine keeps going up; the website has an
enormous amount of hits to show its advertisers.
It's an advertising scam - last one of these I remember was for Winrar
about 6 months back. That weren't freeware, neither.
The download has been withdrawn, and it was a closed download for
Computeractive readers only.
Whatever you say.
Anyhow, I have now Winrar for free.
(and more payware for free.)

I got the serial number but I was never able to download the file.
Anyone able to post it to a file sharing site? Perhaps e-mail it to me?

typically, one can get trial software which is unrestricted and lasts
30 days, and you don't even need to enter a serial number.
you target naiive people in your marketting, advertising it as free,
the idea of a free serial number offereing the full software for a
limited time.
don't use marketting to mislead people, in a public newsgroup of
experienced people / techies.
it's a shame, because actually, acronis is in the good books of
techies. You want to target ignoramuses with your talk, use a different
medium.
If other software was as good as acronis and acronis kept doing this
misleading marketting, then guess what'd happen.
Norton Ghost is a contender. I find it very good, though people tend to
say acronis is better.
This is for the techies - regarding NG
I did have one temporary scare with norton ghost. A computer didn't
boot up at all after a restore. A bit scary 'cos I had backed up the
previous one onto the same hdd. I was calm, I booted up Win XP PE and
that couldn't access the data either. Then it got scary. I thought it
might've been lost. So, I brought the comp back to me, didn't want to
work under such stress at somebody elses place without all my stuff,
and being watched and answering questions about how it was progressing
and what the problem was. As soon I got it home, I researched to no
avail, jst to know what was going on. I turned it on, it booted up.
Restarted it a few times, it kept booting. So why it didn't work was a
mystery.

Doesn't work. Only "offers" me a "15 day free trial" of version 9.1

I don't know how. All I received from Acronis was a confirmation
e-mail and then a serial number e-mail. I never received anything from
the Computer Active website.
Perhaps acf still considers the app to be freeware if you find another
install file elswhere to use with your reg info. LOL.
> Perhaps acf still considers the app to be freeware if you find another

Point taken. Technically, the program isn't freeware, but other
companies/authors have offered free registration keys and licences to
their payware products for a limited time (EPIM Pro and WinRAR come to
mind.) Several other companies have released older versions of their
commercial products with keys and licences. Not freeware there either
IMHO, and the deal usually (though not always) prohibits
redistribution of the key and/or software. OTOH, downloading the file
package from the author/company website (if available) after you have
legitimately acquired a licence key and a password to access their
site doesn't exactly make it "w4r3z" either, IMHO.

I'm glad I decided not to waste my time trying for this one. When
I read that I'd have to allow pop-ups in order to make the
download, I decided, "uh, no."
>Doesn't work. Only "offers" me a "15 day free trial" of version 9.1
Again, Log in to your Acronis Account using the email adress you
registered True Image with and the password there was on the site that
came up on the adress in your "Acronis: Acronis True Image 7.0 request
confirmation"
Go to "My Account", and then "Registered Products", then click on "Acronis
True Image 7.0 (English)" and after that, choose "Get update"
Other than you I wonder who else wrote that password down. It sure
didn't come in any of the e-mails I received from them.
IIRC, from a friend who upgraded to V9, this is the release that does not
directly write backups to DVD.
Okay, Ivan. That did it. Thanks. Where I screwed up was in using
the link in the email. Going to the home page, clicking "My Account"
on the extreme right, then going through login and following your
instructions worked like a charm.

It's in the second email:

come handy for me, especially because my handwriting sucks!

It was not in the mail I received either
well, you could register the program again, if you want
http://www.acronis.com/mag/vnu-ati7
Not in mine. Only serial number.

Well, I guess you could try Ivan's link (in an earlier reply) and
reregister.

For me, the information mentioned above was displayed on the Acronis site immediately after registering, like this:

You're right! I forgot that what I did was copy the registration
email (from dodgeit.com) and paste it in to a new email to my valid
gmail address (for storage,) along with a "cut'n'paste" of the text
above.
Duh! My bad again.

I managed to get the password by re-registering. I have finally
downloaded the program and will give it a shot. Thanks for your
suggestion.

No, it writes them to DVD+RWs but not DVD-Rs, IIRC. V10 does both. I
may have a few +/-s reverse in that, or maybe they should be +&-. :o)

The same thing for me. Can anyone post a sure download link for Acronis
7.0 trial version? (I think I will register and legalize with serial code
that acronis have sended to me, not?)

Look upthread to Ivan's earlier posts. If you saved the password to
the Acronis website, log in there and download 7.0 following his
instructions. If you didn't save the Acronis website password,
reregister for their site and get the file that way. The serial code
you got by email will work,

Many, Many (and many again! :-> ) thanks! just downloaded. I have only
another question, I can post installation file (about 20 MB) in binary
groups or elsewhere freely or not?
--
*Lutrin* || XanaNews lover
Short answer: Probably not.
The EULA on page 3 of the users manual says (in part):
----------
3. The Original Purchaser may not engage in, nor permit third parties
to engage in, any of the following:
A. Providing or permitting use of or disclosing the Software to third
parties.
B. Providing use of the Software in a computer service business,
network, timesharing or multiple user arrangement to users who are not
individually licensed by Acronis.
C. Making alterations or copies of any kind in the Software (except as
specifically permitted above).
D. Attempting to un-assemble, de-compile or reverse engineer the
Software in any way.
E. Granting sublicenses, leases, or other rights in the Software to
others.
F. Making copies, or verbal or media translations, of the users guide.
G. Making telecommunication data transmission of the software.
----------
I'd say posting the installation file to a binary group would be
prohibited by (A), (C), and/or (G).

I guess the Acronis people figure, if they make users suffer
enough, it's almost as good as getting paid.
