I want to replace it with a good free package.
I was thinking about Avast.

Your choice is good...go with it...and prosper.

Because it does the job without any help from me.
I used AntiVir & switched to Avast & have been very happy with
it.Either is a good choice, however.
First off, I'd recommend upgrading to Windows 7 ASAP. With that
said, I've tried several AVs, both free and commercial and the best
advice is to practice safe hex. After that, find one that works for
YOU. For me, AVG got annoying because of it's insistence upon
requiring a reboot after nearly every update and it slowed my
computer a bit...not much, mind you...just enough to make my computer
not "snappy."
Avira worked fine after I disabled the annoying ad to upgrade except
for the fairly frequent update failures...which were becoming more
and more frequent. I wound up downloading the updates and applying
them manually more often and got fed up.
So I switched to Microsoft's Security Essentials which had good word
of mouth. I've just begun using it, but I can say that at least for
a week my computer has been as "snappy" as I like it to be. Is the
detection rate better? No idea, since I practice notoriously safe
hex, I am quite rarely in a position to get infected with malware. I
suppose we shall see if the word of mouth was correct or not.

Avast or Avira. I prefer Avira but have used both. Avast gave me a number
of false positives, which I found annoying, but better to err on the side of
caution. :-)
Avast
Avira

Regarding AVAST, does the programme automatically update the signature
files, or must this be done manually?
Thanks
It does both, database and the program itself.
Just set the updates to automatic in the settings.

I've been using Avast for some time now. No problems there...

Yes, it updates the signatures a couple times a day.I am having a bit
of trouble getting the Program Update to do so automatically. It is
checked in Settings but still doesn't seem to want to go.BTW-- you can
get new versions this way, rather than a separate download, which is
very convenient.

On an older system (like mine) avast slowed things down a bit as opposed
to AntiVir.
