If you want to go the thorough path, as well as getting a portable
tool to keep for future use, all you need is some sort of bootable
Linux distribution, such as Knoppix, that has the “shred” tool
installed. From console mode, you just need a single command like:

# shred -n 2 -z -v /dev/hda1

and you're all wiped clean. More details on:

'dd' can be used as well:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=4k conv=notrunc

In fact, I believe that DBAN uses 'dd' at its core.

The means to perform a secure earse is probably already incorporate in
the hard disk that you have. This erases even the bad sectors that got
remapped (other utilities don't do that).

information. I like the SecureErase program.
After recently exploring my system disks, trying to recover data, it seems
the same files are stored in many places, helping to make secure data
deletion almost impossible. Short of disassembling a drive and drilling the
platters, SecureErase hopefully removes data.

I wonder if all info is removed, i.e. file names, which at one time I could
edit or remove using a sector/disk editor.
