Could someone have a look at this please. It's the
free version of Alfaclock. It's supposed to be free,
but mine has started saying that my 30 day evaluation
period has expired.... I've been running it for over a
year ?????????
http://www.alfasoftweb.com/alfaclock/
Could someone install it and let me know if you get the
same evaluation message ????

Yep. Nasty little thing. No mention that I can see on the site that it
is a 30 day trial. No mention at the licensing screen at the beginning
of the install. But at launch the 30 day nag screen. I wonder if you
updated your copy? Or if it autoupdates behind your back?
Universal Extractor will not unpack the thing.
Thank God for Total Uninstall.
You can get TClock Lite here:
http://homepage1.nifty.com/kazubon/tclocklight/index.html
The file to download is: tclocklight-040702-3.zip. It requires no
installation. The help on the web site leaves something to be desired
but it is pretty intuitive to use.
George
Looks like it updated in the background, without
asking...grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I've got rid of the rotten thing...
Thanks George, I'll have a look at that, I wanted
Alfaclock because it syncs my clock and customises the
system tray clock at the same time, now I use two apps
Dimension 4 and TClockX to do the same job.

The reason for your problems is that the site you visited is actually a
rip-off of the real and original Alfaclock by Yaroslav Mironov. His site is
at
http://www.alfaclock.com/default.html
There you will find AlfaClock Free v. 1.90 which is true freeware. No nags,
no time restrictions, just plain free. I used that for quite a while with no
problems.
You can also find on that site a new version he is testing now called,
appropriately, BetaClock, aka AlfaClock2. It is now in Beta 16 build 156,
which you can also get from the same website. I have been using BetaClock
beta builds for a few months now. They are very good, very stable, do what
you are looking for, and add new features to AlfaClock.
Whatever you do, avoid the "alfasoft.com" site like the plague. Stick only
with Miranov's site which I gave you above. Try the REAL AlfaClock. You'll
like it.
Hope this helps.
Wow !!! Thanks for that info. I cant believe someone
would blatantly rip off Alfaclock like that.
What worries me is that I remember I downloaded
Alfaclock from the site you posted above, and had used
it for months, but suddenly it was hijacked by the
phony version. I have no idea how ?????? and this is
very worrying
What also worries me, is what else has the phony
version installed on my PC ?????, and now I also feel
very guilty because I asked people in the group to try
the phony version. Sorry to anyone who installed the
phony version, I had no idea that it was phony.
Actually "TClock Lite" will do time sync also but you will need to
manually enter the following NTP Server if you live in the US:
Be aware there is also a "TClock2" available (differennt version) that
I don't like.
George
When you go to the AlfaClock Free v. 1.90 site that you reference and
click on on the link to download it, you get redirected to
"download.com" which is where I think I downloaded my copy. I didn't
install the beta version which appears to dowload from the authors
site.

Download.com gives you 1.9 - Alfaclock Free - which appears to be pure
freeware. The d/l from Alfasoft Research labs gives 1.83 - Alfaclock
Classic - which is sneaky trialware.
Both are the same app, same licence, same in all respects.
The betaclock is clearly a bit of a rewrite/upgrade.
My guess? Alfaclock's author - Yaroslav Mironov - worked
for/with/was(?) Alfasoft and his work got 'owned' by them. They had a
bust up, Yaroslav walks out, releases 1.9 as a cosmetic upgrade to
allow him to regain copyright in some sort of sense and say this in
whatsnew.txt:
>version 1.90 - July 4, 2005
> [!] AlfaClock is now FREEWARE
> [!] We have opened new domain: http://www.alfaclock.com
> [*] other minor fixes and improvements
Both builds of alfa appear to be copyrighted to Alfasoft and the beta
is copyrighted to Yaroslav.
Looks like a family bust up to me.
or try advanced version

That one's not freeware!

Hope this clears this up.
George
"alfaclock_free_edition.exe" version 1.83 is the phoney one
"AlfaClock_Setup.exe" version 1.90 is the genuine one

Bigger is better, trust me.
