I never really used SoftCat but AFAIK it does allow for drag and drop.
IIRC, you can use an external search program to find exe files, like
Windows Find or better for instance XYplorer which more intelligently
lets you include/exclude multiple paths, and then drag and drop from the
search results window onto SoftCats Programs View.

I forgot to add my alternative suggestion for creating a catalog of the
software on your computer: Nirsofts Shortcuts Manager

This however will work only (or perhaps I should say best) when you
already have a well organised Start Menu folder.
Ideally, every program on your computer should have at least a shortcut
to its (main) executable somewhere in the Start Menu (preferrably in a
hierarchy you setup yourself).
There should be no other (superfluous) shortcuts in there.
(Re)move all shortcuts to readme's, helpfiles etc. and move uninstall
shortcuts to a dedicated uninstal folder outside the Start Menu.
If you already have organized your Start Menu folders in this way (to
have a faster and more convenient Start Menu) like I have (and as I read
John Corliss as well), Shortcuts manager comes in handy.
It will let you export to a comma or tab delimited file.
That lets you have a database with the friendly program names
(IrfanView=the name of the shortcut), the name and location of the main
executables (Iview32.exe), the version number as found in the
executables, etc. and you can manage the datebase (for instance a csv
file) with a dedicated program to add more colums/fields, sort per
field, etc.

If you ever come across what he asked for then perhaps you could let
us know ? What I would want is a program to auto catalogue (in win
98SE) all .exe (executable) programs (that aren't archives) on one's
system.

Apparently however such a program doesn't exist. Those that say they
do this only check registry entries. Excluding those programs that are
single executables and/or don't make registry entries.

Hi John,

If you only want a listing of all exe files on your computer you can
generate that from a command prompt using:

DIR C:\*.exe /S /ON > C:\docs\exelist.txt

This will generate a list named exelist.txt in the directory C:\Docs.
Of course you can send the list to whatever directory name you wish.
It will list all exe files (though it cannot distinguish between
archive files and executable programs) by directory and in
alphabetical order. You would have to repeat the command for
different partitions.
If you want a real catalog program that allows comments, etc., then
I'm afraid you'll have to keep looking.

I am not recommending anything, my list gives you a starting point to
find something to suit your operating system ( most people do not even
mention it ) & skill level. What will work on my computer, may not be

I know. That isn't what I want however. That would also list all
compressed files that are .exe files as well. I would want those
excluded.

Eero still hasn't found time to update SHAID, but it still does a
pretty good job of doing what you want:

One notable exception is installation .exe files (SFX) that are
created with Inno installation maker that are packed using the LZMA
algorithm. Zip Genius, for instance, uses this install making program.

If you download and extract shaid v2.70, you can also download this
little program that I made awhile back. Just place it in with the
shaid files and run "ID.exe" to get a complete listing of .exe files
on your C:, a good listing of all sfx .exe files that are identified,
and a list of program files, with the error of listing of sfx files
that are packed with LZMA:

Nice find! I missed it in my search. A whopping 17.9 k... :) This is a
new program, but it too misses Inno Setup files. I wrote the author to
request an update.

Thanks guys. All three programs miss n detection.

It might well be extremely difficult to identify every way to pack a
SFX file.

In an old Zip Genius file (zg600std(1).exe) bytes 40-52 are "Inno". In
another Inno file (spywareblasterserup351.exe) there is no indication
that I can see what sort of a file it is, but clicking on properties
of the file lists Inno Setup.

To make matters worse, LZMA is GNU, which means it might vary widely
between authors.

If I could find any commandline archiver that works with a test switch
on these SFX archive files that would solve it. I've tried several,
and so far none recognize these file formats.

Thanks, but this program seems to only check files one by one. It
doesn't appear to be able to eg. check all the .exe files one has on
one's system.

It in fact listed more .exe files than Powerdesk could find !

I did write the author and he promptly sent an updated program, but
there were crc errors. I asked that he try repacking and sending
again, but I've not heard back yet. His English is a bit weak, but I
am sure he will see "crc error" and reply again.

It will be pretty easy to set up the same utility to get a complete
list of .exe files and run them one at a time through this program, I
think... :)

It just uses the dir command redirected to a text file.

I don't have a 98 machine anymore, but it should work properly.

Did you place "ID.exe" in the same directory as the SHAID v2.70 files?
It sounds like SHAID was not called properly. I recall that happening
to me while I was writing the utility.

I have to go to work, but I did receive an updated version of ARiD! It
detects Inno Setup files now. I'll see if I can use it the same was I
was using SHAID as soon as I get the time.

Have you had any luck yet, John? Did the utility that I made work

I found aother great utility to assist in identifying files, but I
must know what they are beforehand. Inno Setup, for instance, includes
"Inno" in the .exe header in old versions, but not in new versions of
Inno Setup.

So, what I need to do is to get various versions of Inno and create a
bunch of different setup .exe files with each version. Then, this
utility (TrIDscan) will scan the files made with each version and then
identify the unique bytes for me.

Well, I could scan a bundle of .exe files but I don't know whether it
would help you/him though. I just noticed that TrID can use wildcards.
I will take another look at it when I get some spare time.
