Heyas ppls
I'm after opinions on a really great windows explorer replacement program.
I really hate the way it works, and find myself using My Computer more than
Explorer, and even that sucks :)

So any enhancements/replacements.. please let me know! :)

One annoying thing I found about explorer is the way the default
setting is to keep opening a new window each time you click on a
folder, so I set it to open in the same window (view, options,
filetypes) which is better, but - it's still usefull to have a new
folder open sometimes. If you add the following registry file you get
an option when you right click on a folder to open it in a new window
(it's not like explore which is a double pane view).

cut between the lines and save as newwindow.reg, and doubleclick it to
merge

-----
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\opennew]
@="New &Window"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\opennew\command]
@="explorer %1"

----

I find thats the best compromise for me, otherwise I get my screen
filling up. I like MiniKad too, a small freeware program for quickly
getting to a directory ( http://www.angelfire.com/in/honysoft/ ).

Best freeware file manager imho, is powerdesk (
http://www.ontrack.com/powerdesk/ ), and the best shareware one
Windows Commander ( http://www.ghisler.com/ ).

Best wishes,

IMHO there's no need for this - I use right click --> Explorer

Recently I tried EasyExplorer2
http://www.piquest.com/products/easyexplorer.exe
which is quite nice, fast and has nice configurability.

Having seen that recommended here, several times, lately, I just
downloaded it.

Two words: bit chin.

And I really like installations that are simply "put the executable
where you want it". (Although this one does manage to put one line
in the registry, despite the non-installation installation.)

Pleased to find the built-in text search that works inside NON-text
files, too.

This looks like it will make me stop missing the old XTree DOS days.

Gets 4.5 SharkFins out of 5. I'd give it 5, but I don't want Mom
(may her soul rest in eternal peace) to think I'm too easy. Yeah,
I'm a guy, but Mom was funny that way. :)

I was writing about 2xExplorer! I misread the post to which I
responded.

I shall sack myself a bit later in the day.

I am using powerdesk and it is indeed preferable to Explorer thru use of a
quick-launch icon on the tool bar you can enable it easily, fron ZDnet

I'm torn between fmedit98 and turbo navigator. If someone would make
a hybrid of the two, I'd be in heaven :)

Hello Leon,

I prefer Servant Salamander 1.52 (freeware version)

http://www.altap.cz/download.html

It is conform to Norton Commander Shortcuts and the download size
is only about 210k

Although the program surface is a little meager, it has (almost) all
the functions I need, and enables me a fast navigation through
the filesystem.

Not only that, but it's twice as slow as TurboNavigator in file copy
operations (they use a very small read/write buffer, so "the progress bar
will be more accurate")
