I've been poking around, looking for something like this that we could
manage and use on our own hosted servers. So far, the only thing that
I've found which comes close is AjaXplorer:

<http://www.ajaxplorer.info/wordpress/>

It works well. Manages multiple users & even includes an mp3 player for
streaming stuff you upload. A little clunky... A bit slow. Manageable.

====================================

Hmmm .. who in their right mind would really use an online service to
back up their hard drive? In addition to the possibility of server
failure and consequent loss of your stuff, anybody that is running this
service is bound to have access to your stuff .. password or not. I'm
not about to put my forumula for Coca Cola, or my winning lottery number
online.

No thanks.

Why put all of your files at the finger tips of others? All these
internet "backup" sites are not necessary. Ever heard of DVD's, or as
saxman wrote: mem sticks? To truly backup your OS partition, you should
use some kind of imaging software. I happen to use Ghost (yes, geeks, I
know it's not free... but it is to those who know how to get it). If you
haven't installed an ungodly amount of software titles, the image should
be compressed down, or to the size of a DVD, or less. If your computer
fucks up, boot disk it, and run Ghost and restore. Pretty damn simple
IMO. As for other partitions with "personal" files on them... just
simply back those up by copying to DVD. If you are running only one hard
drive not partitioned into at least two partitions, please send your
computer to my 90 year old grandmother... for she knows better than you
how to "run" a computer.
People are making money by "scaring" them into backing up to an offsite
location... and you know your files are safe... how? Back up your own
shit, if you don't know how... ask.

Good valid points... but I'll say again... how safe are the files? If
you're traveling and you can't find a computer with a DVD reader... you
must be in the company of the wild men of Borneo. C'mon... can't find a
DVD reader? If you are going to be in such a place, you're probably NOT
going to be needing access to your files. Same argument for the mem
sticks. You'd have to be in the smallest village in Indonesia to find an
old enough computer that doesn't have at least one USB port.
Also, most "computer" devices can be very small, i.e., iPhones and
electronic organizers, that can easily hold any information a computer
can. They can fit into purses and pockets and most places Laptops will
not. Ahhhh... Laptops... we didn't even discuss having one of those
along for the ride. I wonder why they invented those things anyway,
seeing how backup sites are available. And if you need access to your
files through said sites, using your Laptop... why don't you just put
the info on the Laptop? LOL Just fucking with you now.
Again, you make valid points... but I don't see the NEED for online
backup services.
If your argument still boils down to someone losing the files or having
them stolen?... nothing is foolproof. Files can be read on the servers,
which, basically, is theft.
No thanks... I'll trust me and my DVD's, CD's, mem sticks and laptops.
