Can someone recommend a good drawing program for general artwork (not
CAD, not overly technical)? Thank you.

You might want to take a look at Inkscape:

Hi Al,

John Corliss just recommended Inkscape from www.inkscape.org---and I
highly agree with John's recommendation.

Also, take a look at GIMP from www.gimp.org. It might be a little more
than you asked for, but it might have many features that you could find
useful.

Inkscape <http://www.inkscape.org/> comes to mind first for a *drawing*
program, although it does require climbing a learning curve to get the
best use from it. The tools at hand are fun to get to grips with though if
you've used any commercial drawing programs before, such as Illustrator or
Freehand.

If by chance your use of the term 'drawing program' might also include a
'paint program', then I recommend "Artweaver' as an addition to your
arsenal of great artistic freeware programs.

Serif DrawPlus (registerware, lots of templates available)

The program is okay, but be sure to lie your ass of when you register to
get it. In the past, I foolishly registered with a real email address
and was flooded with emails advertising their products. Asking them to
stop didn't work. I eventually had to change my email address.

Eh... make that "OFF" not "of".

I'll also point out that since it is essentially an older version of
one of their programs it is not compatible with Vista. You didn't
mention what OS you were using so I thought I'd mention it. NOne of
the free Serif stuff works with Vista.

I was so *mortified* by the hoops I was being subjected to during the
registering process that I gave a 'throwaway' address out of sheer
suspicion ;-)

Turns out it was the right choice to make at the time.

I do not recommend Serif products because of that experience, period.

There must be address-fabricator freeware that will randomly fabricate an
email and snail-mail address with zip.

You can use yopmail.com, mailinator.com or dodgeit.com for a throwaway
email. Is there a need to fabricate a snailmail address with Serif? I'd
never use my real address for anything on the Internet unless I'm making a
purchase involving shipping. Still, I think SerifDrawPlus is worth the minor
fabrication inconvenience for registration.

Does SerifDrawPlus allow the instance of multiple pages per file? Or is it
like Inkscape, produces a single page per file? And as well as the
registration process; Is there any phone-home feature built in once
installed?

Like most vector drawing apps, DrawPlus does not support multi-page
documents. However, Serif's desktop publishing app, PagePlus does. I'm not
sure if Serif products phone home for updates or not, but you can use your
WinXP firewall or most any other free one to prevent unwanted outcalls.

Serif PagePlus (registerware, plenty of free templates)

Do a search for Artweaver as well. I like it a lot.
