My Internet suite ($ware) is due to expire next month and I'm not going to
renew. Is Comodo's basic suite free? Does anyone have recommendations?
Suggestions? Comments? Anything is appreciated.

For Freeware, you are best served with XP's Firewall and RISING antivirus.
That is assuming you are using XP. Indicating your system would help.

Didn't you always recommend comode firewall?

Well you're half right anyway, we have made progress.

Cut the 'risible' and use AVG, AVAST, or ANTIVIR and load up Windows
Defender and Spywareblaster + use a bit of common sense and I'd feel OK,

I like/use Comodo's firewall and AntiVir PE for AV (both for machines I
build/sell and those I maintain) without problem. You'll hear stories and
problems with whatever you use be it $ware or freeware but in my experience
- and independent tests - this is the strongest freeware combo. As always
YMMV.

I am using NOD32, but I have Avira Antivir installed as a "second

Avira Antivir has a daily "commercial" to upgrade to a paid version.
How to avoid this commercial:

For a firewall you could read this:

I use OnlineArmor Free 3.0.0.190

For anti-spy/adware I have installed:
- SuperAntiSpyware Free 4.24.1004
http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html
(the bottom choice)
- Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.32 (Free)

Also these are useful:
- (Comodo) BOClean 4.27
(install and forget)
- WinPatrol 15.9.5
(install and forget)

Is it phoning home to tallemu.com all the time? I thought autoupdate
wasn't enabled in the Free version, but someone (perhaps it was you :-)
told me it was. But even so, it doesn't have to be connected _all the
time_ just to check for new versions... So I ask myself, why is it
connected all the time?

Is it? I never noticed.

- Options
- General
- Check for new version, you can select:

- manual only
- every hour
- every 2 hours
- every 6 hours
- every 12 hours
- every day

Of course I selected: "manual only"

How did you see that?
Because if it is so, I will look for an alternative!

And maybe it is calling to check a program against the OA Whitelist?

I installed it on my niece's PC and when I checked connections, I saw a
(constant) connection to tallemu.com. AFAIK I unchecked some setting
about sending anonymous statistics or something like that.

I'll send this to her, so she can check it out.

If I remember correctly, there are two icons in the systray, one for the
firewall/settings and one for connections. In connections I saw a
constant connection to tallemu.com. Next time I'm there I'll also check
with TCPView.

The what? :-) In any case, this connection wasn't on and off, it was
constant. It bothered me, but I was too lazy to search another firewall.

I see, Options / Firewall / "Show firewall activity in tray".
Now activated, I will monitor for a while.

So far no activity.
Program "oaui.exe" is present, but looks sleeping.

- Programs
- Options
- Use Online Armor Whitelist (default is on)
and
- Programs
- Programs
- Hide Trusted (bottom of the page) (default is on)

All things quiet here.

I Recently replaced (paid) ZoneAlarm Pro with Comodo free. My decision
was guided by inclusion of HIPS in COMODO to replace the easily to learn
HIPS of the other Firewall. I am still trying to become competent with
COMODO HIPS. It seems to learn well and becomes less intrusive every day
as it learns. However, I still need to fully grasp changes to individual
program security policy and pre-defined security policy.

I read that COMODO AV is not recommended so decided to stick with AVAST
which was already installed.

Depending on how I go controlling COMODO security policy, Threatfire in
combination with Windows inbuilt firewall may become its replacement.

Wonderful feedback. I'm looking at various combinations. Thanks to all of
you!

I just discovered Comodo and it looks like it is the best firewall. I have
used it to block 4 ips that were bothering me because I didn't know what
program was accessing the ip addresses. I was able to determine who was doing
the accessing and allow the ips to continue to be accessed. Comodo has the
best rating of all free firewalls (and pay ones also, I think). It is easy to
format sophisticated operations if you know a bit about how the web works. It
starts up the first time in 'Safe Mode', but in my opinion it needs to be
immediately switched to 'CustomPolicy Mode' or higher (Summary button/Netword
Defense/The firewall security level is set to).

I had installed PCTools firewall just before Comodo. Upon running LeakTest, it
got through the wall. LeakTest cannot get turough Comodo. As someone else
mentioned, don't check to use the virus scanner durning installation.

Today I have monitored the connections of OnlineArmor all day.
(extra icon for firewall activity in tray.)

No activity of OnlineArmor could be found or was recorded.
So my copy is not phoning home at any time.

Ok, thanks. I'll go "on site" and compare the settings with the ones you
quoted here. Hopefully, that'll solve it.
