daemon tools is a pain in the ass
I did use virtual drive, but that is payware.

Anyhow.

Here is an alright little freeware option.

It's called

"Virtual CDROM control panel"

it extracts to 3 little files
readme.txt
VCdControlTool.exe
VCdRom.sys

if you see the readme, it says to put VCdRom.sys in
c:\windows\system
or as it says it, generally, %systemroot%\system

Then when you run VcdControlTool.exe it will run fine..

If anybody has other freeware they can suggest then please contribute
suggestions.

A note about some others, or daemon tools rather (which is a commonly
suggested one, I have seen it suggested once or twice in chats)
daemon tools currently crashing on me and when installing it if you
click next next next it installs some crap or malware, you have to
check a box to prevent that.. (actually irfanview might nowadays/
currently try to install some google or yahoo crap, but at least it's
a nice little utility, and i guess peopl can use an old version).

I mistakenly missed out the link where I discovered it .

there may be some other articles there of itnerest, it's a blog on
useful utilities. His article on command line ones I don't know if
T4ePortPing is like a command line form of a web port scan, or rather,
a command line scan that scans from the outside(or more correctly,
triggers some other nice server to scan from the outside), that would
be useful.

I use MagicDisc

http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso-magicdisc-overview.htm

Windows 9x/Me/2000/XP/2003/Vista
Windows XP/2003/Vista x64 Edition

MagicDisc is freeware.
It is very helpful utility designed for creating
and managing virtual CD drives and CD/DVD discs.
For anyone who deals with CD-based programs - it is a MUST.
MagicDisc allows you to use almost all CD/DVD image without
burning them onto CD or DVD in order to easily access your
favorite games, music, or software programs
---- It works like a real CD/DVD-ROM:
You can run programs, play games, or listen to music
from your virtual CD-ROM. Allowing you to run your
game images at over 200x faster than from a
conventional CD/DVD-ROM. MagicDisc is
a powerful utility that uses a unique
combination of options to ensure a perfect
back-up every time. Partner with MagicISO,
Your original games/program discs can be
safely stored away, MagicISO mean that
you always have your expensive media stored
safely as CD/DVD image file on your hard drive,
and use them with MagicDisc just like using
the original discs. At the office: Program discs
and many other applications generally require the
original disc to be in the computer's CD-ROM drive.
This restricts the amount of people in your office
who can have access to the same software at the same
time without the cost of additional discs.
MagicDisc virtual drives resolve that problem for you.
No more hunting around the offices for that elusive disc
you need to run your application,
everything you require is just a click away.

All supported CD/DVD image formats

* BIN (CDRWin)
* IMA/IMG (Generic disk images)
* CIF (Easy CD Creator)
* NRG (Nero - Burning ROM)
* IMG/CCD (CloneCD)
* MDF/MDS (Fantom CD)
* VCD (Farstone Virtual Drive)
* VaporCD (Noum Vapor CDROM)
* P01/MD1/XA (Gear)
* VC4/000 (Virtual CD)
* VDI (Virtuo CD Manager)
* C2D (WinOnCD)
* BWI/BWT (BlinkWrite)
* CDI (DiscJuggler)
* TAO/DAO (Duplicator)
* PDI (Instant Copy)

MagicDisc has automatically Detecting engine, so user try to open any
CD/DVD image files with MagicDisc.

I see it's listed on Softpedia:
<http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tools/Virtual-CD-DVD-Rom/Virtual-CDROM-Control-Panel.shtml>
"Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel 2.0.1.1"
"Developer: Microsoft"

It's a very definitive site but I have thus far had trouble using it
usefully.
So, I have some sensible questions to ask about it..
(not interested in trolls moaning about the site having been presented
as if it is the authoritative ACF site. That's not my concern)

There are some questions I have to ask about that site, as regards its
usefulness.. And how to use it in a useful way.

I see that you make fantastic use of it, but I struggle to, and I
don't see many others mentioning it either..

On many main webpages of the website It says
"Some of the programs (good and bad) that have been mentioned in the
alt.comp.freeware newsgroup"

So. How would one know if a program is good or bad? It's clearly not a
freeware site that one can try the programs it mentions and be
pleased. A bad program could be anything from a program with annoying
issues, a program which people don't use because another one is much
better..
Now.. I understand that you may not want to give opinions on programs
because opinions are like assholes. But there are some things that
alot of people agree on..
Like, in many cases, if a program is bad. Or if a program is good.

Good freeware sites list recommended freeware.

I notice that on this 2005 link I found somehow, there was some
attempt to at least give a description.. I don't know whether the
author writing it wrote that just using the author's description, as
some attempt not to be bias.
But now I can't even see descriptions
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2005/PL2005SYSTEMUTILITIES.php
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_SYSTEMUTILITIES.php

Another issue , is of subcategories.
I see that in 2005,
they were considered useful (perhaps the ones chosen weren't so
useful, but the concept is useful)
They were - rightly - listed, in 2005
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2005/PL2005SYSTEMUTILITIES.php
But now..
They seem to have grown tremendously, and they are not well organised,
and so I suppose that is why it seems a decision was made to remove
them from a concise listing at the top of the page.
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_SYSTEMUTILITIES.php

There is a listing here. which is this year
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_CategoryIndex.php
But , the listing involves lots of redundancy - it repeats itself
alot. And it makes terrible use of space.
I suppose I could still find things, with edit...find

If better categories were used it would be better, but on principle,
it makes more sense to offer a listing subcategories horizontally
under the category..

So instead of a -long- vertical list that requires scrolling and makes
terrible use of horizontal space . A horizontal one would be good,
with wrapping.

It does highlight the fact that the categories are rubbish.. but
that's not really a new problem. It is good on principle. To offer
that view.

It was offered in 2005, when there were less subcategories.

For example.

a horizontal view of subcategories under "System-utilities"
It is a bit messy because the subcategories are poorly done, but it's
te principle that counts. And that was seen in 2005, but removed no
doubt because of what we see below.. The poor choices of
subcategories.

Still.. people can find things with edit..find, so it's no disaster.

But you should offer different views.

It's nasty, but so is a long scroll through these.

"

So those are some poitns there.. The lack of descriptions, mix of
the good with the bad, the poor choice of subcategories, the poor
listing of them.

How did you find that virtual cd thing?

I can see one way is to go to system-utilities then edit..find..cd or
edit..find..virtual

I will use your site more in that way..

But I am bothered by the good with the bad. I could be downloading
something that all regulars here say is rubbish. When I could be
downloading something that they all say is good (and use I would
hope).

Good: Look at the "PW" column for (recent) Pricelessware selections.

Bad: Look at the adjacent "W" column for N/R (not recommended) and $W
(programs that are no longer free) Look at the "ware" column - Some
Adware, Crippleware, problem programs are listed - mostly apps where the
author does not clearly disclose the "bad" information.

ACF pages have brief descriptions. Pricelessware pages/programs have
detailed descriptions. The most recent PL is 2007.

The distinction is between Pricelessware pages and ACF program info
pages. PL 2003 - PL 2007 have subcategory links at the top of each
category page. See, for instance:
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2007/PL2007SYSTEMUTILITIES.php

> How did you find that virtual cd thing?

I don't remember but below I list the two ways I usually find a subcategory.

> I can see one way is to go to system-utilities then edit..find..cd or
> edit..find..virtual

1. Do a find on the Category Index page. Find "virtual" will jump you
down the page quite quickly to these subcategories:

"Keyboard: Virtual"
"Mouse: Virtual"
"Virtual CD"
"Virtual Drive"
"Virtual Machine"

The link will take you right to the subcategory:
The "Virtual CD" link is:
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_SYSTEMUTILITIES.php#5.10VirtualCD

2. If you know of one app and want to find others like it use the Google
search box or the Program Index page. The default display on each of the
category web pages is sorted on the subcategories. You mentioned DAEMON
Tools. The link to that app is:
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_SYSTEMUTILITIES.php#0181-PW

> But I am bothered by the good with the bad. I could be downloading

Bad programs are clearly marked (IMO). If you want recommendations ask
about the program(s) in the newsgroup.

Re your suggestions for change. In brief: Subcategories are not listed
at the top of each category page because it would very time consuming to
do so. We have no *current* mechanism for selecting "ACF newsgroup
recommendations" (aka the Pricelessware List). Previous years PL
selections are noted.

that's great..

no point having a list of bad, just marking the bad ones as bad, is
good.

and having a list of good

that there is very good. makes sense.

recommended ones.

I see
and
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2007/PL2007ProgramIndex.php
category list at the top.

a webpage listing all pricelessware in each category.

(potentially badly named) subcategories of that don't get in the way,
it's all on the one page for that category.

that's really good..

well.

It's such a big site, not very intuitive, but I see how it can be used
now.

the pricelessware section, so now I can use it as well as other
freeware sites that just list recommended freeware!

maybe it could do with something similar to the amazon rating /
shopping basket checkout system. Minus the shopping basket and
checkout.
So people can rate and review the freeware. And you can order by
rating or whatever...
and see one person's suggestions.

And what would be very interesting is when a new type of software is
added, such as when eMule appeared, or VNC, or Torrent..

thanks

A mechanism is already in place for part of that (the "notes" links) but
few "notes" have been created by ng participants. I think that tells us
something. . .

All the programs have notes links (so new notes can be created), if
there is a "c" in the adjacent column someone has actually created a
note. For example "CLCL" is here:
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_DESKTOP.php#0110-PW
The "notes" link that's shown is:
http://acfwiki.pbwiki.com/0110-PW

Yahbut. . . aren't you forgetting that the Pricelessware site is NOT a
"typical" download site - it's an adjunct to the ACF newsgroup. ACF is
the "forum" where new programs are posted/ discussed/ recommended.

Thanks for the questions and comments. Please post if you think a
program is in the wrong subcategory or have a suggestion for improvement
in a subcategory name or if you find an error in a program's
description. (Any suggestions for improvement are always welcome.)

I notice that there are 2 sites with similar names
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org <-- the one we have been discussing
www.pricelessware.org/

how did this come about? is the latter one just a pricelessware list,
like an easier to use frontend to the definitive site?

How does one submit a recommendation?
e.g. sobolsoft to add text. to lines of a file. at the beginning or
end of a line.

it works fully, but does it matter if it's nagware?

I guess one might say it's not freeware, it's shareware. But It's not
crippled or limited by a time trial.
If it isn't listed for that reason, then Is any alternative listed?

i know of command line programs and advanced text editors(which use
many commands), but no GUI alternative..
Ms Word might be able to..so if so, then open office could.

It goes through a file and on each line, can add text to the beginning
or end of a line.

Since i've mentioned the sobolsoft add text utility here, i'll
mention other things that can do it, like sed, even though I don't
expect sed to be listed on your site 'cos it's more of a general
purpose linux command.

I just mention it here incase people look for this particular
sobolsoft utility, so they know there are other ways. They don't -
need- to use it.

( I did this from cygwin)
$ echo -e 'first\nsecond\nthird' | sed 's/.*/a&b/'
afirstb
asecondb
athirdb

so,
$ cat thefile | sed 's/.*/a&b/'
or the identical
$ sed 's/.*/a&b/' < thefile

vi or the now more popular, vim, would be able to. Ms Word might..

Actually, it is. (As part of the UnxUtils package, which was
Pricelessware 2007):

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2007/PL2007TEXT.php#4419-PW

;-)

All tools from the UnxUtils package work without a *nix emulator
level, like Cygwin. UnxUtils sed.exe is also a bit more capable
than other sed implementations, because it can treat DOS carriage
return chars as separate characters and not just part of the EOL.

hmm. . . The ACF pages have a link at the top called "Notes and
abbreviations" that takes you to the bottom of the page where some
infomation is given. See:
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_BUSINESS-HOME.php#notes

That info could be expanded and the links could be renamed to something
more descriptive like "What on earth is all this stuff and what do I do
with it?" ;)

Thanks for the kind words. I'll compare the post and the web pages to
see what's missing. I'm on summer vacation right now. ;) When cold
weather sets in I'll see about making some changes.

There have been several Pricelessware sites and sometimes they have
overlapped. See:
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2008/about2008PL.php#history

When the new site (pricelesswarehome.org) was created in July 2004
Garrett became webmaster of the old site (pricelessware.org) for a brief
period of time ("Site last updated: Saturday, September 04, 2004"). The
PL2004 pages I created were replaced by a second set of PL2004 pages
(same programs, different presentation) that Garrett created.

> How does one submit a recommendation?

First off, the program may already be on my TODO list. I *eventually*
add most programs that receive good reviews here (as usual I'm way
behind). That said. . .

If you think an unlisted program is particularly important and should be
added post the information I need for the web page (name, URL etc.) and
explain why it should be added.

Yes.

Best to post questions about possible alternatives before asking for the
addition of a program -> keep the horse before the cart. ;)

A small program I like that does that and lots more:

Program: Text Magician

"Edit text files the easy way. Join or split files while adding,
deleting or replacing text, change to upper or lower case, capitalise
all words or the start of all lines, add text to the start or end of
lines, remove leading or trailing spaces, add or remove blank lines,
remove text blocks, alphabetise lines in file(s), split files at
specified lines or text or into a specified number of files, works on
multiple files and on files of unlimited size. I wrote this for my own
use after I couldn't find a program to do what I wanted, it's extremely
easy to use with a simple interface."

IIRC Sed is included in UnxUtils (a PL2007 selection). lessee. . .

I understand that the linux sed strips out \n , does its business,
then puts it back. So when doing
sed "s........"
there is no point putting a \n in the find string 'cos it won't find
anything, but one can in the replace string.

But I see what you mean..
I have what looks like a very popular DOS implementation/port of sed,
by . Paolo Bonzini
http://sed.sourceforge.net/
And, like the cygwin sed, if you give it a file with \r\n , then even
if you just tell it to replace a with b, it "converts" / effectively
converts every \r\n to a \n
I can see looking at the file afterwards with xvi32

I did read something about a sed implementation for unix - sunOS that
wouldn't even take a new line character in the replace portion. the
workaround was to split the sed s command with a \
just as one can do
ls \
>-l <ENTER> (the > being what the prompt becomes, rather than something entered)
I'm sure you weren't referring to that though.

Regarding unxutils..(which as you and susan said, is on the great
definitive pricelesswarehome site)
A point of potential confusion..
I had actually found something similar on the web, called uxutil(no n,
and i guess no s).
unxutils(the one mentioned on pricelesswarehome) is by Karl M. Syring

uxutil is by Ian Stewartson, UK (1994). (It doesn't contain sed, and
actually the TR command is a nuisance because it displays \n instead
of \r\n even if a file does have \r\n. Whereas the TR in cygwin will
at least tell the truth and show \r\n!)

Also.. a slight problem i think with the pricelesswarehome site's link
to
unxutils
It is mentioned in both the ACF list (as all are I guess)
and the PW list (as I guess the best are)
But the links are different. The link in the ACF list works, the link
in the PW list does not)

PW list: http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2007/PL2007TEXT.php#4419-PW
PW list sed link given is:
http://unxutils.sourceforge.net/
which itself works but links to
http://unxutils.sourceforge.net/UnxUtils.zip
which fails
And the garbo link you give in the PW list
ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/win95/unix/
That gives a list of files , but it is impossible to copy the
unxutils.zip file
ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/win95/unix/UnxUtils.zip
(I don't know what server it runs.. I know with apache web server it's
possible for that to happen, a directory set to execute, means you get
a listing of filenames, but filenames not set to read, mean you cannot
read them.It could be that that particular file is not set to read.
Others can be downloaded. An issue at the garbo end)

The ACF list gives this link
http://sourceforge.net/projects/unxutils/
which works
and it can be downloaded.

Now..
something I haven't figured out yet - How to run it!!!!!!!
I downloaded unxutils.zip
got some files, particularly, bin\sh.exe
didn't get a load of EXEs for each command.
I ran sh, and I couldn't see how to access the commands. the famous
linux command "ls" didn't work, even DOS's dir didn't work. I typed
HELP and got a HELP I get from cmd.exe , just lists popular internal
and external DOS commands. Couldn't run ls or sed or anything.
This wasn't a PATH issue, 'cos there was no directory with the EXEs
that I would have set the path to.

thanks.. I would have found it..
I was just looking on the wrong site..At the time I didn't realise it
was not the site I had been getting used to, and thought maybe the
whole site had been redesigned soon after you had explained it! The
way I had been referring to the site misled me too.
I googled for - you guessed it - and got that, first link.

I changed the subject accordingly

pricelesswarehome ! (not pricelessware)

I notice now I should have looked harder at your sig! you mention both
with appropriate descriptions.

That's standard behavior with UnxUtils sed, also. But you can prevent
this conversation by using the --text switch.

The links in the PW section reflect the situation from the time
of the PW vote for the 2007 list (which was fall 2006). So to say:
They provide a look into the past. The Sourceforge download file
has been updated, since, while the homepage wasn't adjusted.

The acf section on PWH receives updates, whenever necessary.
(And Susan has the time to add them.) So you should look there
for current links.

Garbo will probably (hopefully) only have a temporary outage.
Since Timo still posts to comp.archives.*.announce, I expect
Garbo to be back available, soon. Garbo has been one of the
best Software archives of the 90-th and is still worth looking,
especially for older tools and MSDOS or Win3.x programs. Don't
miss the section on Garbo, either, where Timo Salmi archives his
own *.bat/*.cmd tools and tricks.

Not self-evidently, but the current package contains the *.exe
files in the:

\usr\local\wbin\

directory of the *.zip file.

> I ran sh, and I couldn't see how to access the commands.

Sh.exe is a Z-shell. It is provided for use with the commands
of Windows as well as the *.exe command files from the UnxUtils
package. It will work, once you found the *.exe files ;-) and
copied all together in a directory of your search path. Since
most of the *.exe files work flawlessly from Windows command
prompt,

I don't use zsh.exe (or sh.exe, as it is called at the moment),
myself. It may be necessary for some make scripts and the like,
to prevent mix-ups with Windows commands, though. But I don't
use the UnxUtils make for build processes...

I find it always preserves the \r\n

I think --text is to do with it reading up to but excluding the EOF
marker if there is one. There may be a bit more to it than that, I
don't know.

When I tested details of copy and figured out how it worked with the 2
modes.
COPY when in ascii mode reads up to EOF in source files, and puts an
EOF on the end of dest.
Bad for binary files, and practically poitnless for txt files. So
people do copy /b when combining files because when combining files it
defaults to ascii mode, so that puts it back in key!
I figured out a bit about the EOF and copy with XVI32 and msdos 6.22
help by vernon frazee (effectively the help.com program, on the web),
and more than that.. benny pederson's dos help pages, I think his has
more examples than the MS ones!

at least this sed with its --text , warns that it is in textmode. And
I would think doesn't default into it ever.

many thanks..

the unxutils utilities are excellent ports too. Better than competing
ones. sed, tr, and probably the rest too.

TR sees what there is. If \r\n it sees it . If \n it sees it
SED preserving \r\n when it is \r\n.
And preserves \n when it is \n.

in uxutils(not unxutils).
TR in DOS saw '\n regardless!!! Even the cygwin one saw \r\n when it
was that!
SED(by paolo bonzini) , wrote \n regardless, like the cygwin one, .

unxutils works great.

Not in the version of UnxUtils I use. The download package on
Sourceforge doesn't contain the latest version. There has been
an UnxUpdates.zip, which contained - beside other updated tools -
a newer sed.exe.

You may get the update from here, at the moment:

www.weihenstephan.de/~syring/win32/UnxUtilsDist.html

Don't let yourself be fooled by the update date noted beside the package.
It contains the newer files.

Besides, the source confirms my observation: If the --text switch is set,
the input/output cues are set using the _O_TEXT mode of the _setmode
function. This means, all CRLF will be changed to LF on input and all
LF will be changed to CRLF on output. In both modes the line content
(without the line end chars) is flushed on output and a LF char gets
appended (unless it is the last line). But since the final automatic
conversation doesn't take place with the _O_BINARY mode, the output
will only contain LF without the --text switch, afterwards. (No matter,
what the input looked like...)

[--text]

> When I tested details of copy and figured out how it worked with the 2

The text mode of copy has nothing to do with the text mode of sed.
Both switches target different aspects of the differences between
text streams and those, which are not necessary text streams.

You're welcome. Yes, UnxUtils in general are a must-have for every

I'd like to install this on my win2k system but am a bit confused.
Let's assume C:\unxutils. For the system to recognize these commands at
the prompt then, would I:

- add C:\unxutils\bin\ and C:\unxutils\usr\local\wbin\ to the PATH
Environment variable:
Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Environment Variables

- and add ;C:\unxutils\bin\;C:\unxutils\usr\local\wbin\ to the System
variables section?

Better just copy them into one directory. C:\UnxUtils would be a
good place. But you could also place them somewhere else, for
instance into a "C:\Program files\UnxUtils" folder. You'd need to
refer to the "Program Files" part using the DOS 8.3 name, though.
(Which may be PROGRA~1, for instance.) You get the DOS name by
executing

DIR /x

In fact, using the "Program files" directory, you could also refer
to the %ProgramFiles% environment variable. Therefore:

%ProgramFiles%\UnxUtils

would be equivalent to

C:\Program Files\UnxUtils

if your "Program Files" directory is set up in standard position
using the (English) standard name.

The best position within the search path depends on the importance
of UnxUtils to you. If you prefer to use Windows internal commands,
appending the directory (like you wrote above) will be okay. But
if you want to execute UnxUtils sort.exe rather than the Windows
one, you should *prepend* the UnxUtils path string to the PATH
variable. Separator between entries is always the semicolon.

Please note, that you need to restart your PC for the settings
to take effect. If you wish to *temporarily* change the settings,
you may open a CMD or COMMAND Window and execute:

set path=%ProgramFiles%\UnxUtils;%Path%

Within the active CMD (or COMMAND) Window, the setting is used,
instantly. (But nowhere else inside the system.)

Hm. What else could be of interest? Ah, yes: Please note that you
don't need a trailing backslash. And if you want to be able to
execute both sort.exe programs (and all other duplicates),
without the need to use the full path for one when executing it,
just rename one, e.g. to sort1.exe, winsort.exe or uxsort.exe.
Both should work, anyway.
