Was hoping someone knew of a dl site for a safe codec for MKV
editing/playing. thanks
MKV is not video format ( neither AVI is ).
There are no special video codecs for MKV.
MKV and AVI are multimedia container specifications.
"Decoding MKV" is just separating still encoded video and audio
( plus minor other optional channels ).
There are many video formats capable to be stored in all of them.
So, for example, you can have video encoded
as MPEG-4 ASP ( XviD, DivX )
in AVI or MKV or MP4 ( or others containers ),
or MPEG-4 AVC ( H.264, X264 ) also in the same containers.
Media Player Classing - Home Theatre, or VideoLAN players should be
able to play it out of the box.
For editing I can recommend AviDemux, or HandBrake ( all in one
solutions ), or MeGUI for more complex tasks.
for more questions video related forum
http://forum.doom9.org is highly recommended.

Thanks everyone.
The fact is that my shareware DVD editing software doesn't support it,
that's why I thought it might be just a codec issue.
This file is a high quality one, supposedly. so I don't want any
conversion to be lossy. Does anyone know how to convert this, without
losing quality, to VOB format? From there, I can edit it in my
program and then take it from there. thanks
Yee, Frank. Didn't think you would be back after our chats in
alt.genealogy. Been a long time. Wanna fuck with me again?
