Anyway, I used to have the freebie version of Sonic Record Now on my
old comp. Unfortunately, the proggie and the comp were a bit ancient
and Record Now will not work on my new comp. It was a really great
freebie CD program that worked flawlessly for years. Now I need
another program to work with my built in all-in-one CD/DVD player.
The DVD recorder/player is the kind that pretty much does everything,
plus it's a dual layer jobber. (As you can probably tell, I know
nothing about DVD recorder/players, except that Nero 8 Essentials
sucks mightily.)
I cannot find a freebie Record Now version, and since my needs are
very simple - pretty much to burn and play data or music disks, I
don't see why I should spend a bundle on a paid-for program, but I
will if I have to.
Is there a freebie program that can handle my combo CD/DVD unit,
including the dual burning bit?
Thanks.

Don't use their front-end menuing StartSmart program. Instead just run
Nero Express.

That's not the reason. The devices polled by Nero are getting locked
up. Sometimes this can be caused by antivirus software, like Avira. A
many-year old problem with Avira's AntiVirus is that it does not
distinguish between a drive getting polled to check what *type* of
device it is (by querying its interface) versus actually accessing the
media for that device. Avira considers them the same, so CD burner
programs that go checking what burnable devices there are will cause
Avira to kick in. Avira will also kick in, for example, when you use a
program that queries the S.M.A.R.T. data from a drive to get just the
statistics on it.
I've also seen "keep alive" utilities for optical drives that keeps them
spinning longer (so the drive doesn't keep spinning up and down but it
also means it takes longer before spin-down) that interfere with burner
software.
Do you have any mapped drives?

I am using Nero Essentials 6.6 and haven't noticed the delay that you
mention; however, I also stopped using Avira, especially after it
started to continually poll my floppy drive at 1-minute intervals
(another long-time defect that Avira hasn't fixed), plus I use Nero
Express and don't waste my time using their childish StartSmart
front-end menuing wizard. Considering what you describe about the delay
with Nero, the problem may still exist when you use a different burner
program.

I was wondering why Ashampoo didn't list a free version. This is a
really old 6.76 version. They're up to version 9 now (and when
Lightscribe got added, if you care about that) but it's not free at that
version.

Now version 10 ( free ) as per M. L.'s post, if you want to download
31.7MB.
Easier to read page of the posts.

I don't see "X-No-Archive: yes" posts. The poster obviously wants their
post deleted so it doesn't get archived for any period of time. The poster
doesn't get to select WHEN their article gets expired. At Google Groups,
the expiration is 6 days. With me, the expiration is immediate. If they
consider their post of no value to archive then I'm more than willing to
comply. At their request, I will not archive their post in my local store.
I don't delete the "X-No-Archive: yes" posts. I just tag them as ignored
and use a view that hides ignored posts. So I can see, when I choose, their
posts. The URL link in that post goes to:
http://www.v3.co.uk/vnunet/downloads/2235230/ashampoo-burning-studio-2009
The odd thing is that page says that v9 is the upgrade to the 2010 version.
"Upgrade to Ashampoo Burning Studio 9 ... as a registered owner of Ashampoo
Burning Studio 2010 you can upgrade". Also, the download link does not go
back to Ashampoo's domain. It goes to V3's store site, not to a download
file link. When you hunt around their store site, they don't have version
2010. They have version 9 and will charge you $40 for it. At AShampoo
(http://www.ashampoo.com/frontend/support/php/p_overview.php?session_langid=2),
they do not list a 2010 version.
Did you actually find a version 2010 download from the V3 site?
Ermm...
The download link on that V3 page links to another page filled with
various software offers; the link for free Burning Studio 2010 is in the
middle-right of that page.
As I read the first V3 page, the freebie Burning Studio 2010 allows for
a 75% off promotional upgrade to the full commercial v.9. The upgrade
option is in the 2010 program GUI under "Internet>Upgrade". I picked up
the 2010 promotion recently, even though I own v.9. Good stuff.

Hmm, didn't see it before when I click on the Download link at the V3 link
provided. It took me to http://store.v3.co.uk/ but I didn't see it.
Couldn't be my eyes just zoomed past it figuring the link would actually
take me to the download. Then I browsed by brand, picked Ashampoo, but
still didn't see a 2010 version.
Since Ashampoo doesn't list a 2010 version, I have to wonder how different
or crippled is this version from the offerings available from Ashampoo.
That V3 store link gets a file from http://dl1.creativemark.co.uk, "a small
new media consultancy who specialise in digital distribution." From the
domain registration for creativemark.co.uk, its registrant is Chris Wiles,
the same author of the article in v3.co.uk. So he authored an article
published in V3 that points to a download back to his own domain.
Perhaps Ashampoo is limiting the channels through which they release their
free 2010 version - but it doesn't feel secure getting a product that even
Ashampoo doesn't acknowledge on their own web site. While I couldn't find
the 2010 version mentioned at Ashampoo's own web site, a Google search of
http://www.google.com/search?q=%2B%22burning+studio+2010%22+site:www.ashampoo.com
did find the following web page which is on Ashampoo's site so now I feel a
bit more safe that the product does actually exist and not disguiseware:
http://www.ashampoo.com/frontend/registration/php/trial_step1.php?session_langid=20&edition_id=5924
Is there any in-your-face adware in the free 2010 version trying to lure you
to their commercial version 9?

Unknown to me, my version of Agent sets "X-No-Archive: yes" by default
(that explains why I had trouble Googling my old posts). I have now
changed that default behavior.

As another poster stated, the Ashampoo Burning Studio 2010 download
link is at the URL shown above.
You might look at Ashampoo Burning Studio 2010. I think it's available
for free via this link:

John Corliss BS206. Using News Proxy, I block all Google Groups posts
due to Googlespam, and all x-privat.org posts due to forgeries posted
through that service.
No ad, cd, commercial, cripple, demo, nag, share, spy, time-limited,
trial or web wares OR warez for me, please.
I put 2010 on a spare machine 2-3 weeks ago, istr. I don't think there
were any blazing banner ads for upgrades. That's not Ashampoo's
preferred method anyway; they like to email their offers to registered
users.
I've tried many of their free softwares over the past few years, and
occasionally paid for upgrades to paid versions. What they produce seems
to have a little more power under the hood than is readily apparent. The
GUIs are convenient and easy to work with.
Of them all, the burner programs are the standout for me. The latest
commercial version even includes simple video authoring modules. I'm not
burning/creating video DVD's as a rule, but it's kinda nice to know I
could! Ymmv.
