I never cared for AbiWord, but that's just personal preference.
The best in my opinion is Atlantis Nova. No spell checker, but it
rocks every other way.

Personally, I never liked AbiWord either. I find that "Text Maker",
which is part of SoftMaker Office 2006 for Windows works just fine, and
is free.

Most modern word processors are easy to use. They all present you with
a blank sheet of paper to start typing on, and all offer text
formatting tools in their menu list or toolbar, and they all offer a
File->Save menu item. The best of them can read and write MS Office
DOC formats. I recommend OpenOffice Writer.

So, what matters is whether you have to deal with
powerfully-formatted documents or not. MS Word has been used for
non-fancy professional publishing at times. Adobe's stuff is more
professional (and lots more expensive) for full-bore publication.
I prefer alternatives, but I confess that I use MS Word myself
because it's so standard and I've needed compatibility with my
clients. Otherwise, I'd abandon the damn thing.

I agree. Although I've used professional publishing tools a bit
and MS Word a lot, I've been really impressed with Open Office.
If anything, the interface reminds me of FrameMaker: no slouch!
OO has a function or two that MS doesn't. It's a really good
product. I feel that it's a bit of a resources hog. Other than
that, it seems quite powerful. Of course, it's not 100%
compatible with advanced Word features.
However, the other programs mentioned are more lightweight, and
one of those may be all that you need! If you're a professional
writer of articles or fiction, there's one or two free programs
that are intended for straight-ahead writing out there.
Unfortunately, I've forgotten what they are (anyone?). Having
used two superb writing tools back in the DOS days, it's been
hard for me to adapt to Word, OO, etc. After XyWrite, these are
like writing with one hand tied behind my back.

And what freeware doesn't mess up up some part of complex Ms Word
