Is painting a case as simple as spray painting it with primer, sanding it
back then a few layers of sanded enamel?

I have this shitty case here:

http://www.satotech.com.au/case_H313.htm

and want to test painting it before I go painting a more expensive case.
Then I'm gonna put fans etc in it and use it as a test case (it only cost me
$50 au so its not such a huge loss)...

I think so. I'd sand it before adding the primer though, especially on
painted steel.

Use metal/etching primer for the metal parts, and regular primer for the
plastic, NOT etching primer! There're other tricks to this, depending
on how in depth/complicated you want the paint job to be.

Ya know, I read a really great article somewhere on spray painting a case.
It's nothing new, nothing that most experienced spray painters don't already
know, but for the first timers, it was really an informative article.
It was called spray painting 101 IIRC......ahhhh, I found it
http://www.pc-workshop.net/articles/paint101/paint101-1.shtml

Excellent article!

I should also add: use a respirator! not one of those cheapo flimsy
paper sanding masks, but a respirator with a filter that is rated for
spray painting. Using enamel paints without one of these is a "bad
thing". I poisoned myself once painting a computer case (that's not to
say I didn't get lower exposures when spraying without a respirator on
other occaisons, they just were never so severe that I had to go to the
hospital...after that poisoning I found out how to paint correctly with
spray enamels and lacquers).

My dad has all the proper stuff, but I just gotta get the right paint. This
case is basically a test case to stuff up on before modding a better case
