Used slrn a while ago but looking at other options.
Thanks

the link will get you to the last level sub-dir where you can get
windows mac and linux flavors of the most stable nightly builds. Maybe
you don't like t-bird, but 3.0 is a big leap forward from the 2.23 I was
running. Much better access to screenreaders as well, at least in
windows. I'll be asking you my linux questions here pretty soon.
Have a good one.

Used TRN in console mode, Gnus for Emacs is also good if you "get" the
Emacs environment.
Andrew.

Seconded! I use gnus exclusively now.
Unfortunately, trn is not really available today. It is very old. But
I liked it when it was around. Ten years ago, it was one of the standard
offerings on most ISP-provided shell accounts.
slrn is probably the best bet from the console these days, unless you're
willing to learn emacs and gnus.

Keith,
Just for grins, I reinstalled slrn today. Haven't used it in a while.
That was all of 5 minutes ago. I'm using it to read your message and
compose this follow-up. In other words, it works very nicely with
Speakup, out of the box!
You can use the arrow keys to move up and down through the list of groups,
and press enter to select a group. Navigation is similar when viewing
the threads within a group or the messages within a thread.
The cursor is properly shown, so Speakup announces everything as it should.
Good luck,

I think last time, I got fed up because the tabb to bypass quoted text
did not always seem to work and with long threads, it was a bit of a
pain.
Anyway, will go and get it.

Keith,
I haven't bothered with leafnode in a long time. This sort of thing is
nice for dialup, because you can pull news to the local server, and then
read it while you're disconnected. If that's what you want, have a look
at slrnpull, which is distributed with slrn. Gnus has a similar
feature, called gnus-agent. You get the same result,
namely, being able to pull your news, but it's simpler than setting up a
miniature news server.
I have a cable connection, so I just connect directly to the remote server.
Note that many ISPs have policies against pulling news. At least, they
did at one time.

Yes, most folks just don't know how to quote properly. I've seen long
threads with 5 or more levels of quoting.

Looks like I need to look at the servername in the headers.

Apparently, you're up and running.

Yes, seems to be working.
Just one question, when I select a group, I am prompted for the number of
articles.
I presume there is a way to just see the new postings?
Thanks

Sure. Just hit enter.
You're being prompted because you have hundreds (or thousands) of unread
articles. You'll stop being prompted when the number becomes a little
more manageable. For gnus, the prompting starts when you have 200 or
more unread articles. Not sure about slrn, but it's going to be a
similar number.
There are two options: do a catch-up on the group, to mark everything as
"read", or start slogging through a bunch of old stuff.
