I thought people might be interested: I just bought a set-top box with
audio description, at Maplins, for 14.99. Product code N89LN - not in
the catalogue, presumably as it's refurbished, but it is complete - even
has aerial and SCART lead and battery for the remote. They're quite a
nice box: very neat small unit, and though not speech-aided, you get
bleeps when you change channel to one that has AD on at the moment.
Maplin had printed up a box for it, so presumably they're redoing a lot
of these, not just a one-off. (The model is TVONICS MDR-252. Two
SCARTs.)

The RNIB used to sell the Tvonics range including one with an integral
modulator as well.

One of the big problems with AD as far as I can see is the tendency for the
AD to drop out in the middle of shows, and there is no indication other than
its not there, and you need to either switch channels and come back or turn
it off and on again. The BBC apparently identified this issue as far back as
2002, but presumably nobody has ever fixed it. it has something to do with
synchronising the various data streams and the software that does the
management.

I am led to believe that hd chipsets do not have this issue so the new
talking Panasonics should be ok I suppose.

So bringing this back on topic a bit. what usb dongles are out there for
freeview or freesat that have accessible software and audio description,
maybe even ways to get the ascii text from program guides and teletext.

I note with interest that RNIB are now promoting software for the TVonics
boxes and PVRs for adding speech. Anyone gone down this route? Does it work?
