ATT will be ending their usenet support in the next several weeks. If your
usenet connection is with sbc, pacbell, att, or a related company, you will
need to switch to another news server to continue your subscription to this
news group.

All the best,

Yes, its all this outsourcing which is going on generally, if the company,
in this case I guess Yahoo, is not going to run a news server, then its
tough. I just wonder what the point is here. In my view, there is a
concerted effort generally to make sure nobody can use usenet, look at
Windows 7, you have to download a news client. Many people want you to use
web based groups as these are controllable from one place, one country.

It quite frankly stinks. I imagine is the binary groups which are the
problem. So I reckon text servers could be the way to go if the isps will
fund them.

I hate web based groups as no two have the same interface and quite a few
still have the stupid type in from the picture system to exclude blind
users.

The quickest way to finish use net is to have us all use Google Groups.
Even the fully sighted find that difficult to use.

Googl Groups has destroyed access to the USENET archives. The archives
were a great resource to many of us who are very unhappy about that.

As far as the subject goes... It makes little difference that AT&T is
discontinuing their own USENET service since USENET service is readily
available from other places. A serious problem would be if someday
Internet Service Providers attempt to block access to USENET servers.
Hopefully that day will never come.

The USENET archives are still available at groups.google.com. You're right
that they are a great resource.

Absolutely - USENET may get smaller, but it will be here for the people who
really want it.

Its already going on as far as binary groups are concerned I fear. Not that
this worries me, as its a most inefficient way to transfer files, but as I
say, if pure text servers were out there more than now, it would be great.
