How do you move desktop icons (Windows XP)?

I recently visited a friend, and moved the icons around on her desktop
for her - she has a key combination that gets her to the top left icon,
and then uses her arrow keys to get to the others. (Yes, I know there
are other ways, such as using initial letter.) ..
. I am sure there is a way of moving icons without using the mouse, but
I couldn't figure out what it is.

Well, I've started making my desktop like the old Windows 3.1 version by
putting folders on the desktop with allied shortcuts in. This way you can
group things sensibly for what you are doing.

ways of organising the desktop - the person on whose behalf I asked this
works by icon position, and far be it from me to tell people how to
change their way of working. ..

I must admit I never bother where they are just what letter they start with.
I also allow windows to auto sort them and alert me to non used ones, as
thes are often better put into a seperate misc folder to declutter the
desktop.

I personally just look at my recycle bin, and go back up to desktop
level with backspace and voil�, everything gets put in alfa order, and
the 1st letter thing does the trick. Unfortunately I've never learned
the virtual mouse in jfw. I know it can be useful, but it seems clumsy.
I do a bit of what Brian says as well; having a few folders set up to
deal with diagnostic tools, related functions in a couple of aps, etc.
What screenreader does your friend use?

it from the keyboard without a virtual mouse? ..
