Obtaining a "Faux Virus"?
I want to test the behavior of my anti-virus program (Avast). To that end, I'd like to get hold of something that looks like a virus (contains a known signature?) but doesn't act like a virus (no damage if I accidentally let it loose on my PC or server). With something like that, I could provoke the anti-virus... more »

AVG Free 9.0 - Shutting it Down Completely
The latest AVG, ever since I installed it, likes to take me from whatever game I'm playing to the desktop. It happened during both Age of Mythology, and Age of Empires III. It never happened before updating AVG. I shut down what I could shut down with the Task Manager, and whatever didn't immediately relaunch itself after I shut it down, and that solved... more »

Java Exploits by Version
Does anyone have a list of Java Exploits by JRE release. I have a couple of products I am trying to run and the vendors are telling me I need to run old versions of Java. I am trying to impress upon management just how risky this is and how we are opening ourselves up to attack but it would be helpful if I could point to specific... more »

Avira switches to new update system
[link] Due to the fast growing amount of malware out there in the wild our virus definition files grow fast as well. We monitored the situation with our Updates very closely. We realise that users of the free Avira AntiVir Personal had issues fetching the Updates in time recently and... more »

*.DAT files
I have a friend who sends me email and the attachments are always in the format of *.DAT. Can anyone shed some light on this? I Googled the issue and, from what I understand, it might be a virus issue. Thanks........

Search hijacker
I just got done cleaning up a computer that had one of the rogue antimalware apps. This one was named "Control Center". After finally figuring out a way to get around it in Safe Mode (it came up there too) I was able to get rid of it with Malwarebytes. I went back in Normal mode and ran it again. Also ran Superantispyware and am getting a clean bill of... more »

Avira Free vs. AVG free
I have been using Avira Free but am not very satisfied with the UI. So, I just downloaded AVG Free in order to try it out. Both come very highly rated. My question is: Since you're not supposed to run two antri-virus programs at the same time, what do I have to do (besides uninstall Avira) in order to try AVG? I wonder if I just shut Avira... more »
