Clamav portable does not update

clamav portable does not update - the update window opens but nothing
happens, there's no network activity when it tries to update.
I googled and tried some things but no luck. Does anyone know a fix?

Is there a good resource with a listing of malware and their impact on
users' systems? For example, if one wants to know what the "Artemis!"
malware does, where would one look, since Googling it turns up links to
conflicting information about it.

Virus Total: File-upload text entry box doesn't work

I've tried Firefox 2.0, Netscape 9, and Opera 11.01 (all running under
Win-98) but the results are the same.
I can't seem to type anything (anything visible anyways) in the
