Avast abends - both when trying to update it's virus profiles and when I
try to re-install it.

Since Chrome was also coughing up it's guts, I guessed it's something
with my PC.

I've re-imaged, run MemTest+, run Prime95 (CPU stress test)... but
nothing jumps out at me.

Moved the paging file from a media drive to the system's SDD, and Chrome
seems to have stopped abending.

Could this be something Avast-specific? i.e. maybe the Chrome thing
was a coincidence....

Anybody been here?

Uninstall and reinstall using the following Alwil uninstall utility to
remove Avast.

Thanks David!... that did the trick.

For anybody else that is going here:

- Copy AswClear.exe to C: before starting and run it from there
because it will prompt you to reboot into "Safe" mode and
"Safe" will hose your LAN connections.

- If you have multiple monitors, don't get excess stomach acid
when the Safe mode boot brings up your desktop totally hosed
and scrunched into a single monitor. It will revert to the
way it was once you reboot into regular mode.

- If you get stuck in Safe mode, Start | Run | msconfig.exe
and un-check the necessary options. Google for details.

- When doing the install, I missed some option and wound up with an
unwanted installation of Google DropBox on my PC - and the install
took a looooooong time, most of it around DropBox.

If I do it again, I will take care to tell it (hopefully there's an
option...) not to install DropBox.

Damn I hate it when they do that crap. Well, free isn't always free I
guess.

If you do ever end up with a scrambled desktop, there's a little app
<http://www.midiox.com/index.htm?http://midiox.com/desktoprestore.htm>
that can be used to snapshot and, later, restore the desktop
locations. His web site looks a little out of date but I've been using
the app (shell extension, actually) on Win7/64 with no problems.
