A longer and spoiler-filled post on Man of Steel may follow
later today, but it was terrific from the get-go and all the way
through. Everyone is great in it. I'd single out Cavill, Crowe,
Adams, Shannon, and also Antje Traue as Faora, but the entire
supporting cast is superb. Kudos to Nolan, Snyder, Goyer,
Zimmer, and everybody associated with the movie.
I put it ahead of Superman 1978, with some nostalgia because
I still love that movie. That first one did take a while to get
going and it was a bit camp-heavy, neither of which would
work well today. Personally I don't consider those significant
flaws, but the main problem may be that it's tough to completely
separate the first movie from Superman II. The latter blew it
with the giving up powers and amnesia superkiss primarily.
Then relegating Lois to a cameo in Superman III, and the even
heavier camp in that one sunk the series. Superman 1978 on
its own still stands tall, but I think Man of Steel is better and
shows huge promise for sequels.
The core flaw in Superman Returns was the premise that had
him buggering off to Krypton for 7 years in search of debris.
Imagine Superman with his x-ray vision playing Let's Make a
Deal. He can see Lois and Earth behind Door #1 and behind
Door #2 he sees the remnants of Krypton. So he says "I''ll
take Debris for a thousand Alex" Yes, we're mixing game
shows there but that was the premise of Superman Returns
and it was dumb as dirt. It could have easily been fixed in
a sequel but they chose to reboot and seeing Man of Steel
I'm glad they did.
The Superman - Lois relationship is set up better here than it
was in the first two Reeve movies IMO, and I put Cavill and
Adams right up there with Reeve and Kidder as the best to play
these characters. There've been other good pairings, but I think
Cavill and Adams are that good, and good together, and the
setup on the romance side ought to be virtually idiot-proof
for the sequels.
