But I was looking at this months strip library and thought it was
interesting that in the 09/03 strip Charlie Brown was wearing a
confederate cap, then on 09/04 Brown and Van Pelt were both wearing
one. Says these were strips originally ran 06 and 07-SEP-1961, so I
looked them up in civil war history to see if it was a significant
date and on September 7, 1864 Atlanta was evacuated. Wonder if Schulz
was a civil war buff.
The caps return on 11-9-61. They go back at least as far as 2-16-61 and
seem to be part of Charlie Brown's and Linus's regular attire for
walking to school during that period (see also 2-22-61, 4-21-61,
5-30-61, and 1-30-62).
But see 11-23-61 for an explicit reference to the "Centennial". Whether
Schulz had the Centennial in mind when he first drew the caps or this
gag was inspired by the their appearance in the earlier "walking to
school" strips, I couldn't say.
Note that Linus is apparently on his way to school on 12-27-60 with
Lucy, and he's not wearing the cap. I didn't check whether they appear
any earlier than 2-16-61.
