Well, obviously the musical didn't work. Apparently WB decided given
the track record of "Dance of the Vampires" (Not to be confused with
"Tanz de Vampires" which was very successful) that they would pull out
the Batman musical Mr. Steinman was writing music for and put their
money into a sure thing; "Lastat-The Musical"! ("Dracula-The Musical"
lasted a little bit longer than "Dance," "LaStat" closed in previews!)
If you do a search for "Batman-The Musical," you might find some mp3
files that you can download and decide for yourself how it would have
worked.
Me? I think Steinman had bitten off more than he could chew. The songs
I've heard tend to run too long and drag.
"Graveyard Shift" - Batman singing about why he does what he does. The
term "graveyard shift" gets done and re-done and re-re-done in
increasingly deeper tones.
"Catwoman" - Catwoman sings about why she does what she does. Some
clever lyrics; "I need all the love I can get; I need all the love
that I can't get too!" "I've got nine lives and they're all
defective." and "Forever is such a long, long time and most of it
hasn't even happened yet!"
"Wonderful Toys" - I would have hated to be the actor who had to play
the Joker and had to do this every night (twice on Wednesdays!)
Bizarre number with the Joker making references to Burton's movie as
well as a "Rocky Horror" reference!
"Not Allowed To Love" - Both Batman and Catwoman singing that in the
roles they're in, they're not allowed to love, but they are in a
position to break rules.
"The Children We Were Then" - Batman, singing to Catwoman within the
rubble of a burning Gotham (how much of Gotham is burning I don't
know, maybe just the Joker's lair.)
All in all, it would have closed in previews.
