Ok, were fairly creative people, so does anyone (Father Luke) know of a
children's website that has art ideas? My wife is teaching a grade 3 and 4,
and she'd like to do something more interesting that "let's cut out
wallpaper and make a collage!". Anyone (Father Luke) know of a site that has
art ideas she could use?

Not a website, but some ideas. When I was in the 4th grade
(that was the year before they built the Rocky Mountains),
my teacher loved both math and art. So that's what we ended
up doing most of the time.

Some art projects that I remember in particular:

1. We would draw designs/pictures in pencil. Then with crayons
and a lit candle on our desks, we would melt the crayon as needed
and colo(u)r with it.

2. Take a piece of paper, fold it in half. Take the wrappers
off of crayons, and then scrape small pieces of them (but
*lots* of small pieces) on one side of the paper with scissors.
When done, fold the paper over and iron until the crayons melt.

3. (I don't remember this one exactly, but this is the general
idea) - draw a random design on paper, and color it all in with
different colors. When done, take a black crayon and use it to
cover all the other colors. Finally, take something, perhaps
the end of a key, to scrape pictures/designs into the black,
revealing other colors.

We had something similar to this, although I think it was India ink or black
Tempura paint that we used as the top coating - then, you used a sharp, pointed
implement to scratch out your design, and the random colors underneath produced
a cool effect.

Anyone else notice that Stu's ideas all revolve around kids in close
proximity to fire, hot irons and sharp utensils...?

Methinks someone's trying to drum up some extra business...

Well, even lawyers gotta eat.

Besides, I'm not licensed in Canada. I could get a referral fee,
though.

Hi there. Here's a couple fun things to do with string:

Get cotton twine, like the kind used for tying packages. Get several
colors of tempera paint, and pour them into bowls. Cut several lengths
of the string, and soak them in the paint. Then get big sheets of plain
construction paper, and fold them in half. Take the string out of the
paint, squeezing the excess paint off the string with your fingers. Lay
the string in random designs between the folded halves of construction
paper. Fold the paper back over the string, so it's like a paper-string-
paper sandwich, leaving the ends of the string sticking out of the
sandwich. Find something fairly heavy, but not too much, to lay on top
of the sandwich. I usually use my butt. Pull the ends of the string out
from between the sheets of paper. Unfold the paper, and voila! An
abstract creation!

Blow up some balloons. What's really funny to use are the long ones,
used for making balloon animals (not the ribbed or lubricated kind).
Again, get some more of that cotton string and soak it in different
colors of paint. Take them out, again squeezing off the excess, and
wind it around the balloons. Set them aside until completely dry.
Pop the balloons and pull them out. Voila! An abstract balloon shaped
colored string object. Well, all I know is kids seem to love them.

The crayon-melting thing will work on T-shirts too. Get some plain
white T-shirts that will fit the kids, Fruit-of-the-Loom and whatnot on
sale.

Shave different colored crayons onto the T-shirt front, cover with
waxed-paper, iron, and Voila! An abstract colorful piece of designer
wear.

Here's a fun, simple thing to do:

All you need are pieces of paper and crayons. Have the kids just
scribble on paper, big loopy scribbles all over it. Then, tell them to
look for shapes in the scribbles, shapes that look like flowers and
faces and whatever else they can find, and then add the features to
complete the shapes, like eyes, noses, arms, legs, petals, stems, and
so forth. The faces are the best, because they look hilarious, and I
guarantee the kids will laugh at what they draw.

Something else with paper and crayons:

Put on some music, and instruct the little ones to draw in time with
the music. Try fast music, slow, waltzes, salsa, whatever. They'll
probably start dancing too.

* I used to volunteer as an art teacher at a rural elementary school (grade 3
specifically), and a project that the kids seemed to really like was making a
tie-dyed quilt out of Bounty paper towels (has to be strong paper towels), food
coloring and glue.
You have the kids fold or wad their paper towel(s) up however they like, and
dip them into bowls of watered down food-coloring however they want, lay them
out flat on newspaper to dry, then glue the seperate paper towels together with
ordinary school glue (Elmers or whatever) into one big "quilt". Then they can
hang it up and display it in the hallwy outside the room, or wherever.
Hope she likes this project, I always had fun with it.

Sorry it took my so long to reply, the tears in my eyes were blurring my
vision. The (Father Luke) thing was actually a joke because he's the king of
searches around here. What I really wanted was to use the network of diverse
interests in the NG to find sites that another NG member has had experience
with. Tell me Jimmy, what carries more weight with you: the top 7 responses
from a search engine, or a friend telling you "This <particular> site is
great!"?

Besides, Father Luke is a grown man. He told the church he was going to do
his own thing, so I doubt he'd be too timid to speak his mind to me. In
fact, I think he'd post something like. "Hey Jim Miesner, this is none of
your business, stop speaking for others and shut the fuck up." Of course, I
wouldn't want to put words in his mouth.

Kinda depends on the quality of your friends - and how good you are writing
search queries... considering my mixed history with the former, and the fact
that the latter is most of my LIVING, I'd have to say...

Oh, wait, MY name's not Jimmy!

Are you sure you didn't mean to say "Hey Jim Miesner, this is none of
your
business, stop speaking for others and shut the fuck up." ?

No, Jamie. I didn't. Just because I don't talk that way.

If I may, here's what I mean ....

Someone asked, in a general way ( I bl'iev t'was Hooty ?), were these
little pearls directed form God or Jeeves ? I took it as a
compliment, and added that searching for things has given me a little
homework for my comedy foundation. Because at first I was researching
things like:

"Who came first, the Jerky Boys or The Tube Bar Tapes ?"
" Where can I find out about Brother Dave ?"

And, so, my comedy knowledge grew a little each time I searched.
And all was good.

I began to search other things ....

" Anyone know Filbert's home address, telephone number and e-mail ?"

Piece of cake ....to anyone used to searching. Actually a skill which
needs to be developed .....
(uh, go here to see what I mean: http://www.searchlores.org/intro.htm)

Brad Slaight called me on posting people's particulars, and he touched
a nerve with me. I felt my actions were inappropriate, and I have not
since posted anyone's personal information.

I was asked to help folks learn about teckie stuff &searching on the
web. I threw together a web page, asking for feedback ....here:
http://xxmonastery.home.mindspring.com/TheDouBLeCRoSSMoNaSteRy/The%20ACS%20UNdeR%20GRouND%20....with%20apologies%20to%20The%20Aussie%20Down%20Under%20Coalition.html

Baldwiny enjoyed the site, and we have continued our dialog to this
day.

As I recall, you had asked me about a boat your father was looking
into. I researched that a little and found a site, other than the
manufacturer, endorsing that particular model of boat.

Jamie, dear friend, I don't talk that way because I have been helped
by so many people and have received so many good things in my life
that I find it hard to lash out at any of my friends. But I will
bring folks down a notch or two if I think they are flying too high.
Or boost them if I think they are down. What Jim said was not
reflective of me, and so I answered as I did. I actually felt he was
very rude to you and I did not like being the fulcrum for that.

I also do not like thinking that you may feel I have been taken
advantage of by you. That's not the case at all.

Frankly, my job is to lurk and watch. Post when I feel it may be
appropriate to who and what I am. And study comedy. This has been a
life long pursuit of mine. I am still very new to Stand Up. Maybe a
total of three months combined time since I made the decision to
pursue a place in the Stand Up world of Stand Up Comedy.

I need all the friends/allies I can muster. I hope I have not
alienated neither yourself nor meisner.

I'll say fuck you when I think it's appropriate. Don't worry ....I
can say that. And without apologizing for it.

And may I say, also, I will miss not meeting you at WFL2.

Any questions ?

Peace Baby,
Father Luke

With that in mind, I shouldn't have thrown out the second "shut the fuck up"
To Jimmy. He was being a bit of a dick, but the secodn one was out of line.
Thank you for the searches. And the patience.

I'm sorry Jamie. I was being a nasty nasty nasty bitch. I'm also sorry
about the post of insinuating your fighting fish suckels on your teat.
That was in horrible taste. Please don't hate me.
