I hope this isn't sacrilage, but does anyone besides me think that the
whole business with the boot goes on way too long? Sure there are
amusing moments within it, (yet another mangled proverb by Stan) but
in my viewing of it this morning I couldn't help thinking that enough
was enough.

Don't worry, *plenty* of people think the boot scene goes on too long.
If anything, the consensus seems to be that this is one of their lesser
shorts, due in large part to the boot gag. IMO this film is not as bad
as this consensus makes out to be. Even though the boot routine does
drag, there is enough good material in this short to compensate.

Was “Be Big” a three-reeler?

The Spanish version has even MORE footage! Thou that footage is pretty
funny.

I don't remember much from high school Spanish, yet I find the Spanish
versions VERY funny! Including "Be Big," which I had always considered
a real clunker in the L&H lot. There's one film that has about a reel
dedicated to a magician and a regurgitator, about a half century
before that Stevie Starr guy. Great stuff!

I'm glad to see someone posting about L&H in the L&H usenet group, by
the way. We're still out here! ....somwhere....

Yes, its running time is 28 minutes. Moreover, the basic storyline was
adopted to make this feature:

BE BIG was the last L&H short I bought in 16mm. Not a turkey but
definitely could have been a two-reeler.

Yes -- the Spanish "Be Big" is funnier, although longer -- it has some
really crazy physical gags like Ollie's head getting caught in the vibrating
belt.

I always liked the big fire sequence at the end of the Spanish "Pardon Us",
too.
