Good Morning - What this site needs is a Moderator to stop all the
individuals who keep posting unrelated items on this site.

If I want to discuss "Beanie Babies", etc. I know of plenty of places to
go to for that, but this is supposed to be a teddy bear group! Although
I have only recently discovered this group, and if one were to delete
all the unrelated postings, it would probably bring more collectors to
this site.

I would certainly show a link to this group from my Da Bears Shop site -
I average over 150 visitors a week - however, until this group gets a
Moderator to clean this up (how do these "adults only" postings get on
here?) I will not do so since I value my clients way too much! It's a
shame because there really aren't that many teddy bear collectors out
there - and those that are on the internet are even fewer. It would be
nice to have a site we teddy bear collectors all could go to and enjoy.

I would certainly volunteer to be the moderator, however, I have no idea
how to go about that and what it entails - anyone who knows, please feel
free to contact me.

Please understand, I hold no grudge against collectors of other items
who may visit here, however, the only postings should be for teddy bear
related things.

Thank You - Da Bears - Harriet & Bruce

Hi Harriet,

I agree with you whole-heartedly. I too have become very frustrated with
this site. I am a collector of Hermann & Steiff bears and find very few
posts regarding these. The majority of the posts are about beanie
babies. Because of this I have created my own site "Bear Chat" for
collectors.

HEAR! HEAR! I agree with you wholeheartedly. Please see previously posted
"Arctophiles Unite!"

Great website, by the way.

I've posted a query to the ng - alt.how.to.create.a.newsgroup about a
moderator's "job" and what it entails. I'll forward to this group if I
receive any pertinent info. In the meantime, any of you all know if a beanie
will fray if you gut it and use the skin to make real teddy bears out of it?
I'm just dying to take Fuzz apart!

I took a Curly apart it didn't fray but it's a different material.
Maybe if you pick Fuzz apart carefully and if it starts you could dab the edges
with fray check. Another plus is that he's a lot easier to find now so if it
does by chance shred, then you could replace. I waited to get another Curly
before I cut mine. I was just curious on how cheap these things actually are and
how easy they are to make. They're a fairly simple pattern.

Does anyone know if fabric like Fuzz's is available? I haven't seen it in the
fabric stores yet.

Fuzz is gorgeous material, but I haven't seen it. I may check Edinburg and
Intercal - the mini bears' sections to see if they have it. Thanks for the
info!

Be careful what you wish for, folks. I agree that the beanie traffic on
this newsgroup is by and large unwanted, and annoying, but it is part of
the price we pay for having an open forum. Besides, who in the world
would want to take on the thankless task of being the bear police, by
being the moderator?

If you are serious about taking back the group, then POST about bears,
and do it often. Tell us about that center seam Steiff you've sought for
ages, and found in a little out of the way shop. Discuss the merits of
"Green Lable" Hermann bears, vs "Red Lable" Hermann. Start a thread, or
better yet, start several threads.

We probably won't get rid of the beanie messages, because those
beanimaniacs who post here probably never look at the group, they only
cc their messages to every possible group where they think they may find
a potential buyer. At least, if we make an effort to post about bears
here, we can alter the ratio of bears to beanie posts.

We don't need a moderator, we just a few good arctophiles to take a
stand and make a difference. At least, that's the way I see it.

You bring up some good points Richard. I've also noticed that many of the FS:
Ads are posted by "cityauction" as a courtesy for their sellers. I'm curious
if they would consider taking this group off their list since most are not
bears. Yes I know that beanie bears are not real but it does have bear in the
name so we probably couldn't argue that point. Maybe if cityauction gets
enough complaints about these posts they might reconsider emailing non related
items here.

There is another alternative, it's another newsgroup at:
rec.collecting.teddy-bears
I was subscribed to it once but no one posts there. Maybe if we all go there
and discuss bears then there would be no need for a moderated group.
Just a suggestion.
JoEllen
ps, I collect Hermann, Boyds, my own and yes even some of the unmentionable
beanie bears (what can I say?)

The only problem with trying to take back this group is that most of the
beanie ads are posted by people who never read the group. They'll never
know if 1 or 100 people post here. They'll simply continue to post their
ads until the popularity of beanies fades. Filters work pretty well, but
not everyone has access to newsgroup filters.

A moderated message board (not a newsgroup) is very easy to set up. I would
be happy to set one up on a trial basis. The only problem is that I could
only update messages once a day, so posts could take a while to appear.

Rec.collecting.teddy-bears was dropped by my ISP several months ago. I
assumed the newsgroup had been purged! Is anyone else still able to access
it?

Bella

I read somewhere that Fuzz is made of crimped Tylon - a new fabric created
by Ty Warner and exclusive to Ty Inc. I'm not sure if it's true, but that
would explain why the fabric seems so different.

I tried accessing Rec.collecting.teddybears when it was previously mentioned
in this thread however I was unable to come up with anything. Joyce

I just resubscribed to rec.collecting.teddy-bears but the last post, and I
assume the only one in a long time was made on June 1 and was an ad for a bear
website :~(
I can access it through my server but it won't show up through Deja News or
Remarq. Go figure!

I don't think the rec group got many posts. Maybe we could restart it....
