I just got a note from a friend pointing out an apparently new
unannounced auto-opt-in that eBay has instituted (or perhaps I missed
the notice...(right)).

What it appears to be is that eBay can use any of your pictures as follows:

"Share your Photos Show Consider photos I upload in the listing
process for inclusion in the eBay product catalog and other product
offerings."

His concern was that other eBay users could use his pictures to sell
their products, and even if not, the loss of control for your pictures
as I see it. There is a copyright notice that does state you contributed
the image though.

This setting (which you can change to "NO!") is located in your "My
Ebay" - "Account" - "Site Preferences" - "Share your Photos".

I turned it off...

You may want to read the following as well (this is from the opt-out page):

"(If you opt-out before August 31, 2009, none of your photos will be
considered for inclusion in this program unless you opt back in at a
later time. If you opt-out after August 31, 2009, any photos we select
for inclusion in this program prior to your opt-out may continue to be
used in the catalog)"

Yet another reason I am unlikely to use eBay to sell my products.

Just use your own image hosting. They have a new java-based
pop-up window for showing pictures, which is of course less
convenient, and makes it harder (but not impossible) to save
pictures locally. They have no right to use pictures that you
are not uploading to their system.

OBviously everyone is opting out and they're trying to prevent us from
doing so as much as possible.

Must be a US thing, this option isnt even shown on Australian Ebay.

In fact, most of the other settings there are locked to "yes" and cant
be changed

The kicker is I bet ebay will charge a fee to use a picture that you

From what I can see option is not there on eBay.ca either. Haven't
looked at eBay consistently for a long time now.

I just tried unchecking the YES box and got this message from eBay:
Your preferences are not available at this time. Please try again
later.

Everything was going fine until I tried to uncheck it... Hmmm....

I just checked and my default seems to have it turned off. Over to the
right it says *Show*, if I click on Show it changes to Hide and around
the middle it says "yes" to sharing the pics. I believe you want it to
say "Show" on the far write. That doesn't mean it's set to show, that
is my choice to select "Show".

You want it to say "No" to sharing pics. Show/Hide is just whether it
displays what your setting is set to.

Received this email today

For those that use Ebay to sell:

I dont know how many sellers, particularly low margin, high volume are
going to be able to cope with this:

I dont know if this applies in any or all countries that ebay has
separate sites in - but to me it sounds like a F*(() disaster

------------------------------
Your business is important to us, and we are working hard to provide
an easy, fast and secure payment service to you and your customers
while keeping our prices competitive. We're also committed to clearly
communicating changes to our policies and procedures. To that end, we
are writing to inform you of a change to your PayPal account, which
will take effect 30 days from the date of this email.

Beginning 09/30/2009, a small percentage of the total payments you
receive will be held temporarily as a reserve in your account. This
small reserve amount helps to ensure that funds are available to cover
payment reversals or buyer chargebacks, if you do not have a
sufficient PayPal account balance and do not provide the funds to do
so.

A reserve is like a security deposit for your PayPal account and is
standard practice in the payments industry, especially for retail
segments like General where there is a higher-than-average risk of
reversals or chargebacks. This does not mean that you have done
anything wrong. We are requiring a small reserve in your account
because you sell in a category that has a higher risk of reversals and
chargebacks.

Your reserve amount will be 30% of the total payments you receive,
which will be held on a rolling 90-day schedule. That means 30% of the
money you take in each day will be held in your account, and then made
available for withdrawal 90 days later.

For example, if you receive $2,000 every 90 days into your PayPal
account, then a reserve amount of about $1800 would be required on a
rolling 90-day period. In other words, about $20 would be held in
reserve each day, then released 90 days later.

If you are a PayPal Money Market Fund customer, you will still earn
interest on your total balance while your money is in reserve. Click
here for more information or to enroll in the PayPal Money Market
Fund.

We recognize this is a change in the way we do business with you. By
requiring some merchants to reserve money in their accounts, we're
able to lower our own costs. This helps us to continue providing
competitive pricing for all sellers who use PayPal.

If you have any questions about this change, please call us at
1-877-729-7252. We appreciate your business and look forward to a
continued partnership.

Sincerely,

PayPal

So, are they going to pay interest in this money that they are holding?

Ring the number and ask, or look on the Ebay forum boards and find
out. The percentages quoted vary
from 20-30% but it seems to me to be real and not an email hoax.

That's a complete rip. All they really want is to keep your money to
collect interest for as long as they can. Buyer protection, lol!

Wow, sounds like they're testing the boundaries of their stranglehold on
the online auction market.

I avoid ebay all I can these days, although with the recession in full
swing there's been bargains to be found.

I have always wondered what happened in the upper ring at ebay. The
decision making is lacking common sense. That is no way to do
business. At least that I would do bussiness

When did 30% become small? Can we hold 30% of the item bought for 90
days to stop thift? will ebay not charge us 30% of our bill for 90
days?

These piss ant's in charge of ebay today are all below the age of 19.
Non of them have ever run a successful business
