Circumcision campaign in Africa reduces HIV infections 76%, study
finds

health world
July 21, 2011|By Thomas H. Maugh II, Los Angeles Times

A circumcision campaign in a South African township cut new HIV
infections among the treated men by 76%, researchers reported
Wednesday. The simple operation provides a way to make major inroads
in the HIV transmission rate in countries where the infection rate is
very high, researchers said, and provides a cost-effective way to slow
the pandemic.

Clinical trials have shown that circumcision can reduce HIV infection,
but the new results presented at a Rome conference of the
International AIDS Society show the benefits in actual practice.

Using funds provided by international donors, physicians offered free
circumcisions to all men over the age of 15 in the South African
township of Orange Farm, which has a population of about 110,000.
About 20,000 men participated in the program between 2007 and 2010,
increasing the proportion of circumcised males in the township from
16% to 50%. Among men 15 to 24, the proportion circumcised reached
59%.

Dr. Bertran Auvert, a professor of public health at the University of
Versailles in France, and his colleagues studied about 1,200 men in
the township in 2007 and a similar number in 2010. They found an
average of 2.86 HIV infections per 100 uncircumcised men, compared
with 0.42 per 100 in men who had undergone the procedure. After
statistical adjustment, that worked out to a 76% reduction in
infections. There is no evidence that the circumcised men were more
likely to use condoms or otherwise change their behavior.

The team is now looking to see if the procedure benefited women as
well.

It is not completely clear why circumcision is so beneficial. Some
studies have shown, however, that the folds of the uncircumcised tip
provide a pocket for viruses and bacteria to grow. The foreskin is
also known to have high concentrations of the cells that are infected
by HIV.

Other African countries are also scaling up circumcision efforts.
Kenya has circumcised nearly 290,000 men in the past three years,
primarily in the province of Nyanza, according to the World Health
Organization. The government of Tanzania has announced plans to
circumcise at least 2.8 million men over the next five years. A rapid
results campaign in early 2011 yielded 10,000 procedures. Swaziland,
which has the highest HIV prevalence rate in the world, plans to
circumcise 152,800 men. A statement released by the U.S. embassy in
Swaziland estimated that the circumcision plan there could prevent
nearly 90,000 new infections and save more than $600 million over the
next decade.

Each circumcision in South Africa cost about $108, said Dirk Taljaard
of Progressus Research and Development Consultancy in Johannesburg,
one of the study authors. He estimated that circumcising five men
would prevent one new HIV infection in the next year and that every
dollar spent on the procedure would save about $15 that would have
later been spent on treatment.

Freedom Man & Mack A. Damia care more about propagandizing against the
Jews than saving lives. Once again, an ounce of prevention is worth a
pound of cure! BTW, long time no see! eh I just returned from my
SuperJew World tour of non-circumcision newsgroups! ehe -D, NYC "In
the first detailed professional analysis of psychiatric aspects, eight
patients seeking prepuce restoration were studied and several
psychological disorders were noted [117]. These included narcissistic
and exhibitionistic body image, depressions, major defects in early
mothering, and ego pathology. These men had a preoccupation with their
absent foreskin and represented a subgroup within the homosexual
community [117]. Subsequently some "skin-stretchers" can now be found
amongst heterosexuals, representing 10% of the 1,200 members of one
'uncirc' organization (80% homosexual and 10% bisexual), with 65%
uncircumcised, 30% circumcised, and 5% partially circumcised. Although
many were happy with the result (thus justifying to themselves the
decision to undertake this ordeal), others disliked their new genital
status, even choosing to undergo re-circumcision [164]. The practice
was promoted recently by James Bigelow claims men mourn their lost
foreskin. Dr Yehuda Nir, a psychoanalyst who was head of child
psychiatry at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital says he has never
observed "circumcision trauma', stating "The only thing men are
concerned about with regard to the penis is its size" - PROFESSOR

This is convincing as usual but there are still people who refuse to believe the facts. I wish I could figure out why they are so damn committed to foreskins? It makes no sense at all so far as I can see.

The same reason Jerry Sandusky likes teenage boys. It's a sickness that
can't be treated.

Most men whether circumcised or uncircumcised are not interested in the issue one way or the other. Most penises work perfectly well in either condition and very few men complain about their status. When they do complain it is almost always the uncircumcised men who complain for the reason that there is just so much more to go wrong with an organ that is present than one that is absent.
One small group has fetishized the foreskin to the extent that they oppose ANY circumcision even for compelling medical reasons. This group is fanatical to the point that they will deny any and all medical problems associated with foreskins, including but not limited to susceptibility to HIV infection. They are generally ignorant of science but loudly denounce scientific findings.

Indeed they do.

The so-called "Doctors Opposing Circumcision" have just issued a statement calling for evaluation of circumcision research to be conducted not by scientists, but by "...unpaid volunteers....A group of Europeans, medically trained and some not, from historically non-circumcising cultures". (Gee, what kind of "doctors" would call for unqualified volunteers to do medical evaluations? FAKE doctors, maybe?)

And the so-called "Circumcision Resource Center" has renounced medical research entirely:
"The underlying flawed assumption is that the way to evaluate circumcision is to perform medical studies", say say. Instead, what does the world need to evaluate such issues as hiv-and foreskins? Here is their answer: "They do not need medical studies. All they need are feelings and common sense."

And the so-called "Mothers Against Circumcision" denounce research showing and HIV-foreskin link as false -- citing only some studies done 15 years ago, before all the really incriminating research finding were published!

These groups have no interest in scientific facts. They are also paranoid, and intellectually dishonest.

There are many reasons to circumcise every boy. There are no reaons not to.

All this research about foreskins as a medical danger must drive the "intactivist" crowd crazy! All their bleating about how great foreskins are gets drowned out when World Health Organization, US Centre for Disease Control and so many governments are supporting circumcision campaigns. They are the losing side of the argument.

Extreme pain for one.

Not surprisingly having part of his penis peeled away and cut with a blade causes a great deal of pain. Even when a nerve block is used. I'll provide cites of this at your request.

And as far as having no facts--pro-infant circumcision folks have no measurements whatsoever to measure sexual pleasure experienced by intact versus cut men. And yet they always claim it has no effect. Or maybe you can provide some studies measuring sexual pleasure. An fMRI would be a start.
