A lot of people were following Jesus,
but when he started talking about
giving himself for our salvation,
many of his disciples went away.
Today a lot of people start following Jesus,
but when they are told that the popular gospel
of surrender does not save them,
and that the real gospel that began
the Protestant movement is much different,
they draw back from the truth.
The popular gospel is the same one
the world has always gone after
because it makes sense to the world
that people could get good "enough"
by repenting, surrendering, making
a personal commitment, and perhaps more,
as by baptism, church, taking the sacrament,
giving, serving, enduring, suffering.
But the real gospel is generally disregarded today:
The moment Christ gives us faith to stop trusting our
"righteousness" and start trusting him to regard his
perfect righteousness ours, we have eternal life.
