Subject: NME - National Magazine Exchange - SCAM REPORT
National Magazine Exchange (NME) is a subsidiary of Special Data Processing
(SDP), a phony sweepstakes clearinghouse located in Clearwater, Florida.
This is one of many groups that send out mass mailings telling people they
have won a prize, or that "we have been trying to contact you regarding your
prize".  If you call, they will either try to sell you magazines, AT&T phone
service (yes, they will slam your service), or a travel club membership (in
which the primary benefit is you can receive "specials" already available at
your local travel agent).

NME claims to have had a sweepstakes every year for the past 16 years, but
no "grand prize winner" has ever been awarded a prize in their sweepstakes.
NME's last major sweepstakes lasted more that 3 years before a drawing was
held.

Be advised this company will not even do business in its own state of
Florida.  That is because they have been told their scam will not be
tolerated in the state of Florida - they would lose their business license
were they to try this scam on locals.

Should you receive a mailing offer from them, you are urged to report them
to the Better Business Bureau, your State Attorney General's Office, and the
United States Postal Service.

NME/SDP also harvests information about you when you call, and sells that
information to other companies.  Do NOT give them your phone number, or any
personal information regarding yourself.  It will be sold.  Their claims to
put this information in a "special file, so it won't be released to any
other companies" belies the fact that they have several subsidiary company
offers, and you will receive telemarketing calls from those companies.
Incidentally, they get around the "special file" provision because these
subsidiary companies did not promise to keep your information private, and
your information will be sold from within.

The "diamond watch" they offer as an incentive to buy costs them less than
$1.00, and will take more than 6-8 weeks to ship to you.  If you receive it
at all, it may or may  not work.  They will attempt to obtain shipping &
handling costs from the "fulfillment center" before sending it - yes you
must pay first.

The magazines they sell take 8-12 weeks to start delivery - that's 2-3
MONTHS folk, for something you can have next month if you call the magazine
you want directly.

And while they keep hundreds of sales people on the phones all day to sell
you, the common rube, a 48 month contract to a set of magazines you can
obtain for far less money directly, the line they staff for customer service
has less than a dozen reps.  Yes, this is intentional - they do not want you
calling back to cancel anything.

Scammers?  Oh yes.
Caveat Emptor!!!
