Found this posted a while ago which seems to answer your question:
----------
several things cause echo... #1) it is normal to hear a little *and I
do mean little echo* with CDMA #2) if one of verizon's voice channels
on the tower that is serving you is out of "sync" it will echo
worse... #3) if you are located too closely to a tower *my work has
me about 500 feet from verizon's switch in my area* you will hear an
echo, I do all day long... but I ask my customers if they hear it and
they say no...
so, try using the phone in an area a minimum of 10 to 15 miles away if
it still happens then it is the phone, or the other towers voice
channels are bad too... but I find that once I move farther away from
the tower the echo goes away... except last friday when our switch
tech here in rock springs was "tweaking" the switch and tweaked a
little too hard... then everyone had an echo but it was soon fixed
and all is back to normal...
also like someone else had mentioned if two towers are simeltaneously
serving the call then you will also receive an echo... only way to
solve that problem is move... a little drastic...

Yes, "cycle the phone" simply means to turn it off and then turn it back
on. Only annoying thing is with the VX-1 you have to wait for the
annoying Shutdown and Startup sounds / screen!

If the person you are talking to is hearing theirselves, you may want to try
turning down the volume on your earpiece. I have had a couple of people
complain of this and when I test their phone, you could hear every word
coming out of it from several feet away. Naturally if the volume is that
loud, then the mic on the phone is going to pick it up too. Might want to
give that a try.
